the making of Lil Peep’s “Star Shopping” and its genius; a thread
Peep made “Star Shopping” in August 2015 after returning home to Long Beach from a trip for his grandfather’s birthday. On the trip, he posed for these photos (right before creating the song) with his grandpa and big brother, Oskar. He composed the song’s lyrics on his phone.
A handful of months prior in March 2015, just before making the “Feelz” EP, he had ordered his first mic from Guitar Center and gone with his mom, Liza, to Best Buy to buy some red Beats headphones. Here’s a pic of him in them in 2015.
It was using this equipment and the Macbook that Liza had handed down to him in 2014 that he recorded “Star Shopping” in his bedroom. Later, he tweeted that the writing and recording took just 20 minutes and, if his mic hadn’t broken during, the song would have been longer.
According to producer @KryptikBeats, he and Peep, having met online, made the whole song in less than an hour; sampling Yppah’s “Never Mess With Sunday”, Kryptik made the beat in about 30 minutes, then Peep sent it back with his vocals shortly after.
The song was released on August 17, 2015 with this cover art.
In 2015, @ArtByChase discovered the song on SoundCloud. At the time, Peep had about 200 followers on IG. Chase offered to make Peep cover art and, after chatting in DMs, Peep asked Chase if he could do so for “Star Shopping”. Chase made the below and shared it in October, 2015.
@ArtByChase In 2020, Chase said: “The thing about Gus that was so amazing was that he already had these ideas and visions in his head, and he just needed some help from someone to translate them into artwork. It’s such an honor and blessing to be able to have done that for him.”
@ArtByChase Chase would later create both the “Romeo’s Regrets” and “Live Forever” cover arts, too.
In 2019, “Star Shopping” was released to all streaming platforms and, in 2023, it surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify. In December, it was certified 3x platinum.
Speaking on the song, Liza said: “He had no label, no studio, no promo. He worked alone in his bedroom, usually through the night. The success of this song is testimony to his gift as a poet, his passion, his honesty, and the way he used his voice to evoke feelings in all of us.”
Peep performed “Star Shopping” at shows all around the world to loud and loving crowds. In London in April 2017, he introduced it saying: “This one is very special to me and I bet it’s very special to all of you too if you’re here tonight. This is not my song, this is our song.”
“Star Shopping” is Peep’s most streamed track of all time on Spotify, sitting today at a huge 1,154,259,720 streams. That’s pretty impressive.
