Is Ngozi Fulani guilty of cultural appropriation? The British charity boss at the centre of the Buckingham Palace race row has adopted an African-sounding name that makes no sense to Africans themselves, says @rakibehsan spiked-online.com/2022/12/08/is-…
@spikedonline @rakibehsan Well if she was in South Africa "Nkosi" (pro. Ngozi) sort of means "Lord" and the only time I recall someone saying "felani" it was used as a rather rude pejorative. So, "Lord twat"? Something like that? But it was a while ago so don't quote me
@spikedonline @rakibehsan So perhaps Lady H was actually more au fait with African ethnic groups than Ms Fulani herself and new that the Fulani are a people spread across many countries of Africa. So when she asked "Where are your people from?" it would have made perfect sense. It's called context.
@spikedonline @rakibehsan She's taken the name of a slaving culture, as well. Which is ironic.
@spikedonline @rakibehsan As she states she's British, then yes she is guilty.
@spikedonline @rakibehsan Yes and she has used it to go to war on the monarchy through an 83 year old lady. Shameless!
@spikedonline @rakibehsan She's as British as I am and it's as much a costume for her as it would be for me, but cultural appropriation is nonsense anyway.
@spikedonline @rakibehsan I guess it beats being boring old Marlene from 'Ackney. I'm Mike from Brighton, but just think what I could do with my ancestry. I could be Mick the freedom fighter, and walk around in a tweed suit quoting Yeats.
