Goddamn, I just came across this post in LA's Reddit and I don't think I've ever seen Los Angeles and the United States roasted so accurately and devastatingly. The state of our cities really should be a national embarrassment.
It's crazy to think that in cities across America, mayors, council members and thousands of bureaucrats all walk into City Hall every weekday morning thinking "How can I do the shittiest job imaginable today?"
@stan_okl I mean. DTLA has never felt safe to wander at night. But I never felt safe walking at night when I lived in NYC, SF or SD either. Yes, it’s gotten worse. Encampments In Ktown seem to have quadrupled since COVID. And we have to pay taxes to city govt that actively make it worse.🤬
@stan_okl @APZonerunner This was my experience of visiting San Francisco for the first time, complete culture shock and heartbreak at the poverty, and genuinely scared at times. There is just nothing on that scale here in Australia
@stan_okl Reminds me of the reaction from international travelers to 2018 GDC (Game Developers Conference) sfgate.com/bayarea/articl…
@stan_okl @IrateMaxwell It became pretty clear to me after visiting Brazil many years ago that it was a preview of our future: staggering wealth coexisting with the most horrific poverty, and a state that does little more than keep the latter away from the former.
@stan_okl @allahliker i bet we could solve these problems if only we'd give the police a few more dollars
@stan_okl @3vanSutton “as if a government can consist of only police officers”
@stan_okl LA is pretty bad but it's just a condensed version of pretty much every US city I've been to. Even the smaller ones. You don't have to look very far in any city to see absolute poverty, and only a few miles away you'll find the ludicrous wealth that created it.
