Democracy, which is the cornerstone of the United States, is founded upon a strong public education system and the education of all children. Governor Lee’s Education Freedom Scholarship Act proposal would allow participants to receive $7,075 in public tax dollars annually and
use it to pay private school tuition, for homeschool supplies, and other “education” related expenses. This would be like a person saying they didn’t want to pay taxes for police, they wanted to keep their money (voucher) and hire private security or receiving a voucher for
@starnes_steve And would deprive poor districts of tax dollars support for school, furthering the gap between the educated middle class and the poor…
@starnes_steve The problem is, we're not a democracy... we're a constitutional republic.
@starnes_steve MY director of schools. Thank you for saying this, Steve.
@starnes_steve If public education was up to par, this wouldn’t be a problem. Yet here we are. 🤷🏼
@starnes_steve We are a representative republic. Yes, strong public education was important, yet here we are with decades of drastically failing public schools. They have been co-opted by those who would end our republic and the liberties provided by the Constitution/which is no longer taught
@starnes_steve A large majority of those vouchers go to kids already in private schools, whose parents can already afford it. But it's not enough to cover all tuition, so poorer families still can't take advantage of them. It's welfare for the rich.
@starnes_steve But the public school reading proficiency scores are terrible…
