I asked ChatGPT to analyze a job posting I found for a senior pastor of a growing, mid-sized church and to list the competencies needed to do the job well. They're not unreasonable , but when considered cumulatively the pastoral burnout problem makes more sense.

I don't think it's becoming of pastors to publicly complain about their work, but read a few job postings from churches and you'll realize that there is a specific kind of delusion about the pastoral vocation--and, frankly, the human person--that is unique to evangelicalism.

In the New Testament, elders emerged within a local assembly based on proven character … As they served God’s people through relationships, plurality, example, persuasion and earned respect. Today, we instead hire a “Senior Pastor”from the outside based on external credentials … To rule over an organization called a “church” through appointment, position, hierarchy, titles, command and control. Big difference.

#OTD April 9, 1945: Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer is hanged at Flossenburg, only days before the American liberation of the POW camp. The last words of the courageous 39-year-old opponent of Nazism were “This is the end—for me, the beginning of life.”

Adoption is the highest privilege of the gospel. The traitor is forgiven, brought in for supper, and given the family name.

Lenten Thought: As we wander in the wilderness of Lent be reminded that unlike Christ, we don’t enter the wilderness of our own temptations alone. Rather we face the anguish of our sin and brokenness with the one who says, “Do not despair. For I have ovecome the world...

Another biblically informed deconstruction we need to embrace: there are NOT 2 tiers in Christianity known as clergy and laity. All Christians are clergy (priests) and all Christians are laity (everyday people).

In Jesus Christ, we see who God is. God doesn’t exalt himself, he humbles himself. He doesn’t come in power or might, but as a helpless child needing care. He doesn’t demand status or wealth: he is born in a stable, surrounded by shepherds.
