So bizarre, unhinged, self-obsessed and frankly scary. Alex’s essay and cover letter could be a course for budding psychiatrists studying narcissism and personality disorders. If you thought he couldn’t get more batshit…..

@stuartjdneil Dear Dr. Neil, Your rather hostile language and insults are neither kind nor helpful. Have you considered that perhaps your behavior reflects poorly on scientists and may foster a culture of either fear or intolerance in the field? Please consider the value of kindness 🙏❤️
@stuartjdneil Fair enough. But, "Flo and Zack's" "pre-print" is definitely on the spectrum of irrational. And you didn't seem to have a problem with that?
@stuartjdneil @PeterDaszak I remember watching General Milley's face and response when asked about the dangers of lab leaks. I was really close and got a very good look at him. He looked as guilty as sin.
@stuartjdneil 😮 Should have tried that already for the publications contained in my thesis (Swedish system). Damned. Had I known... So much had been different.
@stuartjdneil "Your work is simply too bold!"
Hmm. I think Twitter/X and public debate generally are better when people argue about ideas instead of engaging in personal attacks. Mr W made some valid points. It is not exactly a secret that there are problems with the peer review system including: - undeclared conflicts of interest - a lack of transparency in other respects - a tendency for reviewers not to keep an open mind when considering work that challenges the prevailing wisdom - submitters being left in the dark over progress in the review of their work.
@stuartjdneil While Alex’s surfeit of self-confidence can sound jarring, his comments about peer review square with much of what I have read on the topic. Hyper-specialisation seems to breed narrative guardianship — “without this sacred truth, my career is nothing”.
