One of them happens to be my best friend with whom i shared the same roof while writing the thesis. Her work and details were detailed and impeccable however lacked a binding force. Her comments were blunt, rude and inconsiderate of the work she put into it.

2 out of 12 in my class got a ‘fail’ in their Master thesis. I wonder how fair is it to disqualify someone’s work for even a grade. The batch of 2020 have had a terribly testing time writing a thesis and graduating in the current market. @AcademicChatter

@shivanim675 Hello, thanks for sharing this. Can i ask you what kept you motivated through 30 applications? And what do you feel was your strongest asset that took you to those interviews?

Feel defeated by meritocracy. Got a D in my Master's thesis and all attempts of my PhD applications seem futile. Is this the end of my academic journey? @AcademicChatter

@GiffordPayne @AcademicChatter Thank you so much for the recommendation. I registered myself on their vacancy portal. I'll be looking at market-based research firms.

@camargovemuri @AcademicChatter i did. They have allowed me to write a second thesis but I'm fully aware writing another thesis is not a small feat. I'm an immigrant who doesn't have the luxury of time and money. Caught in frenzy of confusion.

@antarcticblues @LeanneCPowner @AcademicChatter its news to me that US doesn't consider grades. however, having spent 3 yrs in Europe and Norway i feel highly invested in this geography. connecting through someone with the same topic seems highly vital now. thank you for your insight :)

@PhDmyLife @AcademicChatter 1) working and meditating on this point. the chance to correct them is very costly in terms of time and finances. 2) the big goal is to keep working in my field, maybe opening up to the idea of private projects and other research positions. Thank you for your feedback :)

@mitchmatheny @AcademicChatter I have been granted a chance to write a second thesis but as an immigrant on a visa, I don't have the luxury of either time or money. However, your story sounds encouraging. To persevaring. :)

@MineralsScience @AcademicChatter I'm planning to run all my application and email texts through someone senior in the field. Its time to double up. Thank you so much for your suggestion :)

@MineralsScience @AcademicChatter My advisor left me halfway because of her own personal developments. due to covid we only submitted the written document and didn't defend it. the grades came in after four months. I tried emailing but never got any +ve response so I was only applying to vacancies posted.

Over the past two years, I have cultivated a cv that shows both, my passion and personality. I was determined to pursue my career in academia, but now the attempts seem futile and plan B feels like a compromise.

i don't mean to toot my own horn, but I have been a diligent and proactive student/researcher. I'm also fully aware of areas that need work and I'm quick to learn.

@LeanneCPowner @AcademicChatter In Europe, grades..especially of your master thesis becomes quite vital. I'd love to gather your perspective on PhD apps...whenever its convenient for you.

@sassmaster_96 @AcademicChatter As per my knowledge and experience, in Europe, especially Scandinavia, grades of your master thesis becomes a defining factor in PhD applications. :(
