The impostor feeling here is the nature of doing operations work in a discipline that's still being built. You write the next memo anyway. You learn to live with the doubt. synoptro.com/blog/when-bein…
There's a kind of impostor syndrome that comes from being right. You see a structural risk before others do, you document it, nobody acts, the failure arrives two quarters later. The analysis held up. The doubt didn't dissolve. The two coexist.
Two-part fix: keep the player-coach role at 80/20 (mostly coaching, occasionally playing). Staff the operational stewardship separately. The JD writer can see both. The role survives a 40-hour week. The design system survives the year.
Player-coach in a design manager JD: a manager who leads creative direction and still ships pixels when the team needs unblocking. Reasonable role. Becomes unsustainable when the JD stacks team-builder, vision-setter, process architect, AI champion behind it.
v3 routes requests through product management, not around it. PMs file a Jira form, design leads triage weekly, scoped work enters sprints with engineering work. Design isn't a parallel intake anymore. It's in the same prioritization conversation as everything else.
I built design request intake three times in the same company over three years. Two of those versions stopped working before the year was out. Each was correct for its moment. The form is downstream of how the company makes decisions, and that keeps changing.
