George Lucas cut his own directing salary by $350,000 for a clause Fox executives thought was entirely worthless. That single piece of paper turned him into the wealthiest filmmaker on the planet. In the video below, vintage footage shows the origin of the empire he built from a movie the studio expected to bomb. 1976. 20th Century Fox greenlights Star Wars, mostly to keep working with Lucas after American Graffiti. The board expected a massive box office flop. Sci-fi was considered financial poison. When contract negotiations began, Fox offered Lucas a standard $500,000 directing fee. Lucas made a counter-proposal that stunned the room. He offered to drop his upfront paycheck to just $150,000, leaving $350,000 on the table. In exchange, he demanded two specific rights. The rights to any future sequels, and 100% control over the movie's merchandising. Fox signed the deal on the spot. Movie merchandise was a dead industry at the time. A decade earlier, Fox had lost millions trying to sell Doctor Dolittle lunchboxes. They thought they were robbing him. They were wrong. Star Wars became a cultural leviathan. Because Lucas owned the sequel rights, he independently financed The Empire Strikes Back using his own cash, forcing Fox into a pure distribution role. By 2012, licensed Star Wars merchandise alone had generated over $20 billion in revenue. That same year, Disney bought 100% of Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stock. Did Fox executives commit the costliest corporate oversight in Hollywood history, or did George Lucas execute the most brilliant game-theory play ever recorded in a contract? Another story tomorrow.

Ronald Wayne owned 10% of Apple for exactly 12 days. Then he sold his entire stake for $800. In the video below, Wayne explains the exact minute he decided to walk away from a fortune. April 1, 1976. Three men sign Apple’s original founding agreement. Steve Jobs: 45%. Steve Wozniak: 45%. Ronald Wayne: 10%. Wayne was 41 years old. Jobs was 21. Wozniak was 25. Because he was the only senior executive, Wayne drafted the contract, drew the first logo, and wrote the Apple I manual. Then, the first massive corporate order came in. To buy the components to fill it, Jobs immediately borrowed $15,000. Under the partnership's legal structure, every partner carried unlimited personal liability for the company's debts. Jobs and Wozniak had no money and no property. Wayne had a house, savings, and a traumatic business failure four years prior. He knew exactly what happens when creditors come to collect. On April 12, terrified of being ruined by two ambitious 20-year-olds, he filed the paperwork to withdraw his name. His payout: $800. A year later, when Apple incorporated, he accepted another $1,500 to waive any future claims against the brand. Today, Apple's market capitalization has crossed the historic $5 Trillion milestone. Depending on dilution, Wayne's 10% stake would be worth up to $400 billion. He is 91, lives in a modest house, and insists he has no regrets. Was Wayne the only founder clear-headed enough to read the risk in the contract, or the man who executed the costliest exit in business history? Another story tomorrow.

In 1999 Yahoo bought Mark Cuban’s company for $5.7 billion. Cuban owned roughly a third of it. There was one problem: Yahoo paid in stock. At the height of the dot-com boom, everyone around him thought Yahoo would keep going up. Cuban had seen bubbles before and decided he wanted to protect the money instead. In the video below, he explains why. “When we sold to Yahoo, I was like, I’ve got a B next to my name. That’s all I need, or all I want. I don’t want to be greedy.” His first attempt went badly. Cuban says he put roughly $20 million — almost everything he had in cash at the time — into a hedge against internet stocks. He lost it. Then he tried again. This time he built a collar around his Yahoo shares: he sold call options, which limited how much more he could make if Yahoo kept rising, and bought put options, which protected him if it collapsed. People thought he was leaving money on the table. Cuban even went on CNBC after Yahoo kept climbing. One host asked whether he felt stupid for hedging so early. His answer: “Yeah, I feel real stupid sitting on my jet.” Then the dot-com bubble burst. Yahoo eventually fell more than 90% from its peak. Cuban’s stock was protected. He later said the hedge actually made him money and has described it as one of the most famous trades of his career. He had already won the startup game. Instead of trying to squeeze out every last dollar, he paid to make sure he couldn’t lose the fortune. Would you have capped your upside — or kept betting on Yahoo?

Before Bryan Johnson became famous for spending millions trying to slow down aging, he was selling credit-card processing door to door. He became the top salesman at the company, saved enough money to hire engineers, and used that cash to start Braintree. At first, it was just another payments business. Then companies like OpenTable, Airbnb and Uber started using it. Braintree kept growing, and in 2012 it bought Venmo for $26.2 million. One year later, PayPal bought Braintree for $800 million. Johnson was 36. The fortune that now funds his longevity experiments came from a payments company he started after knocking on doors and selling credit-card processing. Long before Blueprint, there was Braintree. The full interview is still available on YouTube.

Peter Rahal started RXBAR after reading a random article about cheap businesses anyone could start. He sent it to his childhood friend Jared Smith. The idea was simple: they could start a nutrition bar company with $10,000. So they each put in $5,000. They had no investors, no food industry experience and no real distribution. The first RXBARs were made in Rahal’s parents’ basement. Getting into major retailers was almost impossible, so they went somewhere the big brands weren’t paying attention to. CrossFit gyms. They drove around Chicago selling boxes directly to gym owners, one location at a time. It worked. RXBAR grew from a basement operation into one of the fastest-growing nutrition bar brands in the US. By 2017, Kellogg expected the company to generate around $120 million in annual sales. Then they bought it for $600 million. Rahal had started with $5,000 of his own money. Four years later, his protein bar company was worth more than half a billion dollars. The whole thing started with an article about businesses that were cheap to start. The full interview is still available on YouTube.

Five days before Moiz Ali sold Native to Procter & Gamble for $100 million, his company still didn't own the name “Native.” Ali launched the deodorant brand in 2015. The first version was made by a seller he found on Etsy, and within roughly two and a half years the business had grown enough for P&G to agree to buy it for $100 million in cash. Then came the problem. Someone else owned the trademark. Ali said other potential buyers wouldn't even make an offer until Native controlled its own name. P&G kept moving forward, but the deal still couldn't close without fixing it. So Native bought the trademark for a high six-figure amount. They completed the purchase just five days before the acquisition closed. Two and a half years after starting a deodorant company, Moiz Ali sold it for $100 million. For almost the entire journey, he didn't even own the name on the label. The full interview is still available on YouTube.

In 2013, Tope Awotona emptied his savings to build Calendly. He had already tried several businesses that failed. This was the one he decided to bet everything on. Awotona had worked in enterprise software sales and had already experimented with businesses selling projectors and garden tools. None of them became what he hoped. Then he became frustrated by something much simpler: the endless back-and-forth required to schedule a meeting. So he built Calendly. He did not start with a large venture round. Calendly says Awotona founded the company through the “complete and utter emptying” of his personal savings, putting his own money behind the idea before he knew whether anyone else would care. For years, the company remained largely bootstrapped. The product itself was almost boringly simple: send someone a link, let them see your availability, and allow them to choose a time without exchanging ten emails. Then millions of people started using it. By 2021, Calendly raised $350 million in a deal that valued the company at $3 billion. Awotona had gone from failed side businesses and emptied savings accounts to owning a major stake in one of the most widely used scheduling products in the world. Today, Calendly says its platform is used by more than 50 million people across 240+ countries and has helped book more than 1.3 billion meetings. The strange part is how ordinary the original problem looked. There was no revolutionary hardware. No new social network. No complicated financial product. Just people wasting time trying to find a time to meet. Awotona emptied his savings to solve a problem most people simply tolerated.

Alex Lieberman started Morning Brew in college as a simple email for classmates. Six years later, the company was valued at about $75 million. He was 28. It did not begin as a media company. Lieberman was helping other students prepare for finance interviews and noticed that many of them struggled to keep up with business news. So he started sending a daily email. No newsroom. No large team. No complicated product. Just a short business newsletter people actually wanted to open. Then the audience started growing. Morning Brew went from a college email to a media company with millions of subscribers. In 2020, Business Insider acquired a controlling stake in a deal that valued the company at roughly $75 million. Lieberman was still in his twenties. The strange part came afterward. Years later, he said leaving Morning Brew was harder than building it. For years, the company had been tied to his identity, his routine, and the way he measured progress. Then suddenly, the thing he had spent years trying to build no longer needed him in the same way. The full interview is available on YouTube. Building the company gave him a goal. Selling it forced him to decide who he was without it.

At 19, Zach Yadegari sold the company he started while he was still in high school. The app had reached roughly $30 million in annual revenue. Cal AI looked simple: take a photo of your food and use AI to estimate calories and macros. But behind the simple product was constant testing, aggressive marketing, and a teenager trying to build a real company while most people his age were still worrying about school. The business grew quickly. By the time Zach returned to My First Million in 2026, Cal AI had done about $30 million in revenue the previous year. In January alone, the company generated around $5.7 million. Then he sold it to MyFitnessPal. The strange part was his age. The first time he appeared around the podcast, he was still in high school. By the next major appearance, he was 19 and had already built and sold a company doing tens of millions of dollars a year. The full interview is available on YouTube. Most founders spend years trying to get their first company to work. He sold his before turning 20.

At 22, Jack Smith started Vungle. Seven years later, the company was sold for around $800 million. He was 29. The strange part is that Vungle did not begin with the business that eventually worked. Smith and his co-founders entered an accelerator with another idea, realized it was going nowhere, and started looking for something else. They noticed mobile apps were becoming huge, but advertising inside them was still terrible. So they built a simple mock-up for video ads and started showing it to app developers before they had a finished product. The response was strong enough to keep going. Vungle eventually became a major mobile advertising platform. By 2019, its ads were appearing across tens of thousands of apps and reaching more than a billion devices. That year, Blackstone acquired the company in a deal widely reported at roughly $750–800 million. Smith was still in his twenties. Years later, he appeared on My First Million and talked openly about what happened after the exit. The full interview is available on YouTube. The interesting part is not that Jack Smith had the perfect idea at 22. It is that the idea he started with was not the one that made him rich.

At 17, Timothy Armoo sold his first company for about £110,000. Fifteen months later, he had lost almost all of it. Armoo had started building businesses as a teenager in South London. The first exit made him think he understood money, business, and risk better than he actually did. Years later, he admitted that the success made him cocky. Then the money disappeared. He made bad investments, spent too freely, and within roughly 15 months most of the £110,000 was gone. The lesson was uncomfortable: making money once did not mean he knew how to keep making it. A few years later, at 21, Armoo started Fanbytes while still at university. The company helped brands reach Gen Z through influencers and social media, eventually working with companies such as Nike and McDonald’s. The early years were not glamorous. Fanbytes did roughly £400,000 in its first year, £1 million in its second, and £1.7 million in its third. Armoo says the founders kept paying themselves around £500 a month while reinvesting heavily into the business. Then the market started changing. Within a short period, several companies approached Fanbytes about partnerships or acquisitions. Armoo believed the industry was beginning to consolidate, and that waiting too long could mean missing the window. In 2022, at 27, he sold Fanbytes to Brainlabs in an eight-figure deal. For about six months, he felt incredible. Then the feeling disappeared. Armoo later said he used to laugh at founders who sold companies and then complained about feeling empty. He thought having millions in the bank would solve that problem. Then he experienced it himself. For the next couple of years, the question became simple: “Now what?” The full interview is available on YouTube, where Armoo tells the story himself. At 17, he learned how quickly money can disappear. At 27, he learned that even getting everything you wanted does not automatically tell you what to do next.

In 2012, Ben Francis was delivering pizzas for £5 an hour while building Gymshark from his parents’ garage. He was 19 years old. During the day, he studied at university. At night, he delivered pizzas for Pizza Hut. In between, he worked on websites, fitness apps and eventually a small online store selling gym supplements. The problem was that he barely had any money. So when Francis and his friend Lewis Morgan decided to start making their own gym clothing, they bought a sewing machine and a screen printer and learned how to make the products themselves. They did not have a warehouse. They had a garage. They did not have a large marketing budget either, so Francis began sending Gymshark products to fitness YouTubers he already watched, hoping they would wear them in their videos. Then came BodyPower 2013. Gymshark built a small stand at the fitness expo and brought several of those online creators with them. Francis later said the company did around £30,000 in sales within 30 minutes after launching a new tracksuit online around the event. The website crashed. A business being run from his parents’ garage suddenly had more demand than it could handle. Francis eventually left university and stopped delivering pizzas to work on Gymshark full time. Years later, an investment from General Atlantic valued Gymshark at more than £1 billion, while Francis was still in his twenties. The strange part is how little the beginning looked like the company that came later. It started with a sewing machine, a garage, pizza deliveries and fitness videos on YouTube. The full video is available on YouTube, where Ben Francis tells the story himself. He did not start with a billion-pound company. He started by making clothes in a garage between pizza deliveries.

@CRYPT0__GR You can gain a fortune and still lose something priceless.

In 2005, Facebook offered artist David Choe about $60,000 to paint murals inside its first offices. He had a choice: take the cash, or take Facebook stock instead. He chose the stock. Years later, that decision was estimated to be worth around $200 million. Choe was not an investor, a founder, or a Facebook employee. He was a graffiti artist hired to paint the walls, and at the time Facebook was still a young private company. Sean Parker gave him the option to be paid in cash or shares, and Choe later said he chose the shares partly because he trusted Parker and partly because he liked gambling on strange outcomes. Then Facebook became one of the biggest technology companies in the world. When it prepared to go public in 2012, reports estimated that Choe’s stake could be worth roughly $200 million. A painting job that could have paid him $60,000 had turned into one of the most famous startup windfalls ever. In the video below, Choe talks about what happened after the money arrived. The surprising part is that he does not describe it like a perfect ending. In interviews with Howard Stern and Barbara Walters, he said the attention that came with the fortune changed his life in ways he had not expected. He had spent years living as an artist without that level of public attention. Then suddenly journalists wanted to know how much he owned, what he was worth, and what he planned to do with it. The money had solved one problem and created another. Choe had made an extraordinary financial decision almost by accident. He did not build a valuation model, negotiate a venture round, or predict Facebook’s future. He simply chose ownership over cash when the outcome was still uncertain. The full interviews are available online, including his appearances with Howard Stern and Barbara Walters. The strange part is that the decision became famous because of the money. Choe seemed more interested in what the money took away.
