He replies that Standby Squadron includes a number of Tribal Class, several Rothesay Class and Cruiser HMS Blake. Also being surveyed for reactivation are cruiser HMS Tiger and aircraft carrier HMS Bulwark.
April 26th 1982: In the House of Commons, Minister of State for Defence Peter Blaker is asked to provide a full list of ships of the Standby Squadron set for scrap or decommissioning, which might be of use in the Falklands war should it escalate... (continues)

April 26th 1982: Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser makes a statement: "The British Government's decision to use force to re-establish its administration in South Georgia is a natural consequence on the invasion of the Falklands and South Georgia by Argentine forces".
April 26th 1982: In Stanley, Argentine Army Day is celebrated with General Menendez inspiring the men to "Fight like lions". Falklands diarist John Smith adds, "He obviously hasn't seen some of his lions lately. A vet might come in useful."
It also states that British ships should stay on station in South Georgia in case of an Argentine counter invasion. Incredible painting of them here...
April 26th 1982: The Argentine prisoners from South Georgia are to be taken to Ascension on RFA Tidespring. An MOD briefing states they should be termed only "prisoners" NOT "prisoners of war" as no such war currently exists... (continues)

April 26th 1982: Argentine naval transport ARA Rio Carcarana reaches Stanley. She carries drums of jet fuel, diesel, ammunition, 200 tons of frozen food and a container full of colour TVs for the Islanders as part of a "hearts & minds" initiative, hoping to win them over....
April 26th 1982: Some great news for the Falkland Islanders, as the sadistic Argentine Intelligence chief, Major Patricio Dowling, is sent back to Argentina in disgrace after being caught plotting a "final solution to the problem of the Falkland Islanders".
Felix Artuso is buried with full military honours. In the main picture, John Coward of HMS Brilliant consoles with Captain Bicain of the Santa Fe. Artuso was the only man killed in Operation Paraquet. A tragic misunderstanding.
April 26th 1982: At Grytviken, a tragic accident occurs on board the stricken Santa Fe when crewman Felix Artuso is shot and killed by a Royal Marine whilst trying to stop the sub from sinking. It was assumed he was trying to scuttle the boat instead.... (continues)

The Belgrano was an incredible warship and a Pearl Harbor survivor as USS Phoenix, which was a purpose built war machine... in 2023 I chronicled her entire career from the drawing board to her final sinking and the aftermath in the most comprehensive book ever written about her.
