@thehistoryguy @PickardJE What’s in that red bag? Why does she hate it so much?
@thehistoryguy She was voted in by members, the electorate voted the party in not the person, like they always do.
@thehistoryguy @PickardJE She’s right, it’s the bloody think tanks like Policy Exchange, IEA, TPA who expect influence without election, job interview or procurement process we need to get out of government. Is that what she meant?
Odd, I thought Liz Truss was elected in a general election as an MP just like all the other PMs? You know we don't elect Prime Ministers and that the hereditary monarch is just the rubber stamp by our titular head of state ie not exercising power just tradition. As for "being appointed" - just like Winston Churchill (1940), Anthony Eden (1955), Alec Douglas-Home (1963), James Callaghan (1976), John Major (1990), Gordon Brown (2007), Treason May (2016) and Boris Johnson (2019)? Unelected people in the House of Lords who exercise power such as superannuated politicians, Lords Spiritual, judges, millionaire donors and ex-trade union paymasters IS a scandal. Also, the power of Spads, Civil Service mandarins and heads of quangos is also scandalous. (And no I've never voted Tory either).
@thehistoryguy And you only have a career because of your dad. Sorry, I interrupted you, do continue….
@thehistoryguy The party picks their leader who becomes prime minister, not the people. People vote for their local mp . 👍🏾
@thehistoryguy For someone called the history guy, you appear to have forgotten Gordan Browns reign!
@thehistoryguy Like James Callaghan? Like Gordon Brown?
Should I be surprised that a historian doesn't seem to understand how the UK political system works? She was elected by her constituents. Our PM has never been directly elected to that office. I suspect you probably know that, even if you pretend not to in order to make a political point.
