Just absurd to me that the number one thing liberals are arguing about over the recent push towards AI regulation is over whether Amodei, Altman and Musk are, in their heart of hearts, being honest. THATS what you care most about???
If the law explicitly made AI CEOs financially & criminally liable for any mass destruction their technologies create — and if AI industry shareholders knew their companies faced the threat of significant financial losses for such destruction — much of the “AI is getting out of control!” threat would instantly end because those CEOs would instantly make AI far safer & impose guardrails on their companies.
I think the theory here is that AI agents lack the requisite intent to commit crimes and because they aren’t being ordered by humans to do it there’s no one to prosecute. I’m confident that if the law changed on that and liabilities attached to the companies who created / own / direct the agents, we might see those companies behave differently
It continues to baffle me that we don't just treat this like a normal crime with normal liability. OpenAI is routinely hacking other companies. These are crimes! But somehow the idea of holding them liable is just absent from the safety conversation, like agents don't count.
