The Machine That Draws Chips Without a Single Lens

If you have a bug zapper up, it's time to take that shit down. A landmark University of Delaware study (Frick and Tallamy, 1996) counted nearly 14,000 insects killed by residential bug zappers over a single summer. Mosquitoes were 31 of them. A mere 0.22%. The other 99.78% were moths, beetles, midges, fireflies, and the night-shift pollinators your yard depends on. Mosquitoes don't navigate by light. They find you by your carbon dioxide, body heat, and skin chemistry. Your bug zapper is invisible to them and lethal to almost everything else. Harvard Medical School's Zika page specifically warns against bug zappers because they may increase mosquito populations by killing the predators that eat them. What actually works: eliminate standing water within 100 feet of where you spend time outside. Bug zappers are 1970s technology built on a 1970s misunderstanding of mosquitoes. It's time to take it down.

Aurora watching into an orbital dawn. This never gets old!

A truly beautiful moment. After the kids finished their questions, the astronaut was so moved that she teared up following the students' applause. HamTV exists specifically to fully share wonderful moments like these. @ARISS_Intl #hamtv #iss

PEOPLE ARE GOING *BEYOND* THE MOON THIS WEEK

Everyday Astronaut @Erdayastronaut

I'm honestly SHOCKED at how the general public has NO IDEA Artemis II is taking humans out to the moon and will be the furthest humans have ever flown. Every non-space nerd I've talked to has no idea. WE GOTTA GET PEOPLE STOKED!!!! THESE FOUR HUMANS ARE FLYING TO THE MOON!!!

YouTuber AlphaPhoenix pulled off something that sounds impossible. He recorded a laser moving across a room at 2 billion frames per second. That is fast enough to watch light itself travel, something the human eye can never perceive in real time. The camera he used was not a normal high speed camera. It recorded only one pixel at a time. To build a full video, he fired the laser again and again, each time recording a single pixel from a slightly different point. After thousands of captures, he stitched the pixels together into a full frame sequence that reveals the light wave moving through space. It is a mind bending mix of physics and creativity. The end result lets us watch one of the fastest phenomena in the universe at a speed we can finally understand.

Quantum physics shows that what we perceive as solid matter is, at its core, mostly empty space, vibrating energy, and probability waves — far from the dense, static stuff our senses suggest. Let's unpack this step by step. Everyday objects — your hand, a chair, the floor beneath you — feel perfectly solid. But magnify them to the atomic level, and the picture changes dramatically. Atoms consist of a tiny, dense nucleus surrounded by electrons. The nucleus occupies an incredibly small fraction of the atom's volume — the atom is over 99.9999999% empty space (or more precisely, space not occupied by point-like particles). Electrons don't behave like miniature planets orbiting a sun; instead, they exist as diffuse probability clouds — regions where the electron is likely to be found, spread out across the entire atomic volume. So when your hand "touches" a table, no actual particles collide. The sensation of contact arises from the powerful electromagnetic repulsion between the electron clouds of your skin atoms and those of the table. Solidity is an illusion crafted by these forces. Dive even deeper into quantum field theory (our most accurate framework for fundamental physics), and the story becomes stranger still. Particles like electrons aren't fundamental bits of stuff — they're localized excitations, or ripples, in invisible quantum fields that fill all of space. There's an electron field, a quark field, an electromagnetic field, and so on. What we call an electron is simply a vibration or "quantum" in the electron field. The same applies to photons (ripples in the electromagnetic field) and other particles. Matter, then, is essentially energy patterned into these dynamic field excitations. Even the property of mass — what gives things weight and inertia — isn't intrinsic to particles. It emerges from their interactions with the Higgs field, another pervasive quantum field. Particles "drag" through this field, acquiring mass through these relationships rather than possessing it inherently. This perspective, backed by countless experiments (from particle accelerators to precision spectroscopy), upends our intuitive view of reality. So, what are you, really? You're not a collection of tiny, solid building blocks. You're a symphony of quantum fields in constant vibration, vast clouds of probability, electromagnetic forces holding patterns together — and overwhelmingly... Emptiness. You're energy temporarily organized into the intricate, living form you experience as "you."

On Nov 13th, there was a solar particle event that resulted in beautiful blankets of aurora. You may have seen it. We had the most amazing view and our crew collectively took thousands of photos and dozens of time lapses. Here is one of those time lapses. Nov 13th. Nikon Z9 | 14mm.

Please @aelluswamy @elonmusk bring back manual speed controls until you use good map data and/or it can read and understand signs much better. Right now, if the car thinks the speed limit is 55 but it's actually 35, even Sloth wants to go 55. Inversely, if the car thinks the speed limit is 35 but it's actually 55, even Mad Max won't go fast enough. We have no way of adjusting, so in these two scenarios we have to turn off FSD for no good reason. We want to help you improve the system, so let us help. Give us a way to report incorrect speed limits. If we manually adjust the speed, send that to the mothership and if it happens in the same spot over and over, it should learn.

@DirtyTesLa Did they put max speed back? 🤞

@WifeDirtyTesla @DirtyTesLa Yes. We need max speed setting back. Very annoying currently.
