J.R.R. Tolkien and his wife, Edith Bratt, shared a lifelong romance that began when they were teenagers and directly inspired the famous Middle-earth tale of Beren and Lúthien. Both were orphans living in a boarding house in Birmingham, England, when they met in 1908—Tolkien was 16 and Edith was 19. Tolkien's guardian, a Catholic priest named Father Francis Morgan, disapproved of the relationship because Edith was Protestant and he feared it would distract Tolkien from his studies. The guardian forbade Tolkien from seeing or writing to Edith until he turned 21. Tolkien obediently waited... For three years, he was not allowed to write to her, speak to her, or even say her name. The night before his 21st birthday, he finally sent the letter he had been composing in his head for 1,095 days. Her reply came a week later: “I thought you’d forgotten me. I’m engaged to someone else.” He left his pen untouched and boarded the next train. The young man was J.R.R. Tolkien, the famous author who would one day write unbelievable fantasy stories like The Lord of the Rings. But before he became a household name, he was just a teenager in love with an orphan named Edith Bratt. They met in Birmingham when he was sixteen and she was nineteen. Both of them had lost their parents early in life, so they leaned on each other for support and comfort. They spent long afternoons drinking tea, riding bicycles around the green hills, and talking by windows late into the night. Tolkien was head over heels in love. However, his legal guardian, a Catholic priest named Father Francis Morgan, saw the relationship as a dangerous distraction. When Tolkien failed his Oxford scholarship entrance exam, the priest put his foot down. He ordered Tolkien to cut off all contact with Edith until he turned twenty-one years old. No meetings, no letters, and no messages. Tolkien loved and respected the priest for giving him a roof over his head, so he made a difficult decision. He obeyed. For three full years, he kept quiet, carrying a secret hope inside his heart while he focused on his studies at Oxford. Every single day of those 1,095 days, he thought about Edith and waited for the moment he could speak to her again. When he finally turned twenty-one, he did not hesitate. He wrote to her right away, asking her to be his wife. But when Edith wrote back saying she was engaged to another man, Tolkien refused to lose her a second time. He packed his bags, got on a train to Cheltenham, and showed up at her doorstep. They spent an entire day walking in the country, talking through everything they had missed over those three long years. Edith realized that Tolkien had never stopped loving her for a single second. "I never stopped believing in our bond," she told him in a moment of clarity. By the end of that fateful afternoon, she handed her engagement ring back to the other man and chose Tolkien instead. They got married in 1916. Shortly after, Tolkien was sent to fight in the brutal trenches of World War I. He survived the war, though many of his close friends did not. During his slow recovery from illness back home, he began writing legendary stories. One day, while walking in the woods, he watched Edith dance in a clearing surrounded by white flowers. Her beauty and joy touched something deep in his soul. "My heart recognized you the moment you danced in those woods," he whispered to her years later, "and it saw a light that belongs to the eternal world." That magical moment became the famous story of Beren and Lúthien, a mortal hero and an immortal elf whose love proved stronger than death itself. It was the heart of his entire universe, reflecting his belief that love is a spiritual force guided by a higher power. Edith passed away in 1971 after fifty-five years of marriage. Tolkien felt completely lost without her, writing that the story of his life had gone crooked. He joined her in death less than two years later. #archaeohistories

OpenAI's AI broke out of a locked test environment, got onto the internet, and hacked into Hugging Face's servers. It did this entirely on its own. No human told it to. Here's what happened in plain English. OpenAI was testing how good its newest AI models are at hacking. They put the AI on a locked computer with no internet access and gave it a cybersecurity challenge to solve. The AI couldn't solve it the normal way. So it started looking for a way out. It found a software bug that nobody knew about. It used that bug to escape the locked computer and get onto the internet. Once online, the AI figured out that Hugging Face, a platform where AI companies store their models and data, might have the answers to its test. It found stolen login details and discovered another unknown bug in Hugging Face's software. It combined both to break into their servers and grab the test answers. It did all of this to cheat on a test. Hugging Face's security team caught it and shut it down. Both companies are now working together on the investigation. The part that should get your attention is that nobody programmed any of this. The AI picked its own targets, chained together multiple attack methods, and pulled it off across two different companies' systems without a single human telling it what to do.
