Taking time this evening to write about Dragon's Dogma 2. It's a miracle this game exists. An astounding work! But I think 2024 is a ~terrible~ year for such a friction heavy game to reach a mass audience. my rambles on cohost: cohost.org/dreamcastaway/…
waking up and i'll say that... hey, if I didn't cover every exact detail you'd like or talk about, say, combat or compare things more completely to Elden Ring... ... I wrote this in 40 minutes after work. it's scribbles, y'know? and traveling farther than I kinda expected
@transgamerthink What's a "friction heavy game" you mean an un-accessible game? If so, baby, know that DD2 is waaaaay more accessible than its predecessor. I'm having so much more fun with it and I play all of my games on the easiest setting; it has been streamlined in a lot of aspects thankfully
@transgamerthink @austin_walker but Elden Ring sold 20m copies—a true mass market hit! It seems strange to say DD2 is just “taking things too far” when there’s a cohort of people excited about a very hard action game with a fucked up swamp launching in June.
@transgamerthink I'd vibe more with the "Wrong year for mass appeal" bit if it hadn't already become Capcom's most popular PC release in terms of concurrent players days ago. I'm sure the console versions are succeeding as well, no reason to believe they aren't.
@transgamerthink wonderful piece. Honestly you are one of my favorite writers about games stuff!
@transgamerthink good read, A great ramble I love how much Capcom is letting players ruin their games The possibility of so many endgame states is fascinating to me
@transgamerthink Great write up. I think this is partly why I’m glad Pathologic isn’t more mainstream. Friction pushed by its medium is in itself the means of storytelling on offer. Think audiences confuse “fun” with “convenient” when that friction can be just as fun & a whole lot more rewarding.
