@TheDMLair People forget it’s a game. The narrative doesn’t have to “make sense.” We aren’t Critical Role. You don’t have to find some sort of narrative excuse for why the character isn’t there.

@hill_jowett Right. It’s something I’ve ported over to my 5e games. I will define what will happen with a failed roll and tell them the DC so they can make the decision. But the math isn’t as easy in 5e as a d100 roll under. It’s so simple and elegant.

@SandyofCthulhu Agreed. I love to clearly define failure before the roll. It allows the player to make a more informed decision based on their chance of success. It helps with clever problem solving and greater player agency.

D100 roll over or roll under? Which do you prefer and why?

@JackofTears Absolutely. The “no” should never stop the action or forward momentum of the story.

I hear a lot in the #ttrpg scene that you shouldn’t say “no” as the GM and that you should say “yes, and…” or “yes, but…” I get the sentiment but I’m here to tell you that you absolutely can say “no.” It is the GM’s job to referee the rules. And sometimes that means saying no.

What if trap detection wasn’t based on passive perception or perception checks? How would it work if perception was taken out of the game?

Well, I guess I am writing a ttrpg. Here is a little insight into the main mechanic I've chosen and why: theeverydaysailors.substack.com/p/6-reasons-wh…

Most of y’all probably know I run choppyseas.co and sell men’s grooming products and beard oils. Well I am making room for new products for the fall and just put all the Beard Sauce and Captain Ahabs products on sale. Check it out!
