McGregor, a reverend, before 1909, who lamented the influence of Latin characters ('N' and 'A'), gaining ground in nsibidi-writing areas through colonialism. He continued: [...]
Nsibidi recorded by J. K. McGregor, 1909. "A man and a woman were “friends.” The man wished to leave her, [she refused]. [...] when she was at the farm he wrote this sign all over the house, and [left]. (a) [...] he curses her, saying that she has “craw-craw.” (b) [he's left]."
In 1960, a rural land owner and dibia (diviner) named Nwagu Aneke, who claimed to be ‘illiterate’, invented a syllabary and morphographic writing system for the Umuleri dialect of Igbo. He said the script was taught to him by divinities.

There had already been mission schools established in southern Nigeria by the end of the 19th century. The generation born in the 1930s had largely gone to these schools, it was here missionaries shaped the attitudes of future generations, for example they discouraged body art. x.com/_ccem_/status/…
An Mbari dedicated to the deified Otamini river in the Echie town of 'Opioro' as noted by P. A. Talbot in "Some Nigerian Fertility Cults," 1927. Ala still retained a prominent position among the figures in this Mbari. The Mbari's head priest is noted as Amade Onyeche.
