Mental health nurse: if you really wanted to die why would you come to the ER? Me: isn’t this where you’re meant to come if you’re suicidal? Him: but if you were actually suicidal wouldn’t you just do it? Me:
To this day I’m not sure if he wanted me dead or if managing to piss off a suicidal person to the point where they become mildly homicidal is a legitimate approach. Hard to argue with results (I’m still alive)
@vileslug I had a v similar conversation where they tried to convince me I wasn’t *really* suicidal and as they were sending me home the crisis workers were like “well, there’s not any beds” like they were literally sending me home wanting to die bc they didn’t want to find a bed 🫠
@vileslug I once had a Psych Reg say to me that if suicidal patients really wanted to die they'd just get on with it. Not impressed.
@vileslug Reminds me of when I told a mental health nurse that I'd never been closer to actually doing a certain lifechanging thing to myself and so I was concerned how much worse the relapse might get and she just said "Well, you didn't do it, did you?" she was practically sneering at me
@vileslug It's funny because part of what you're trained to do is try to convince a suicidal patient that there's a part of them that wants to live which is evidenced by their seeking help, but you don't just *say* that to them like it's going to fix everything
@vileslug But if you don’t ask for help they’re off the hook because they ‘had no idea’. So patients are stuffed whatever happens
