For tennis elbow specifically, that cortisone shot is borrowing against the future. A JAMA trial found cortisone beats PT at 6 weeks. By 12 months, the injection group had much worse outcomes and higher recurrence than the group that never got the shot. Short-term relief traded for a potential long-term problem. For a condition that resolves on its own in nearly everyone.
