„However much we may sympathize with a small nation confronted by a big and powerful neighbor, we cannot in all circumstances undertake to involve the whole British Empire in war simply on her account. If we have to fight it must be on larger issues than that.“ Appeasement, 1939
@vtchakarova It's not an issue of on small nation this time. Russia has an economy the size of Italy's and the economic costs of a military move of the scale we are seeing has to be subsidized from outside. #DragonBear is a lot deeper, bigger and militantly expansionist than we knew.
@vtchakarova Well, that idea ends with a very bad reputation
@vtchakarova A comparison that sounds right but actually isn't Russias actions are more bay of pigs than 1938.
@vtchakarova The most zealous not even appeasers but advocates of American military expansionism and interventionism happen to come from former Eastern Bloc countries who have found a new and stronger master.
@vtchakarova Lot of WW2 comparisons around. I'm not sure how useful they are. x.com/deanobeano1/st…

@vtchakarova The bar called "larger issue" was set very high. Blitzkrieg had to begin in the Wester in order for the BE to start fighting.
@vtchakarova "Appeasement, 1939" No, appeasement (Munich etc.) was in 1938. By 1939 this wasn't appeasement, this would have been acquiescence – and that wasn't something that Chamberlain was part of.
