🚨 BREAKING: Andrej Karpathy just open-sourced AI that does AI research for you while you sleep. It's called autoresearch. You go to bed. It runs 100 experiments overnight. You wake up to a better model. Here's how it works: The agent gets access to a single training file `train. py` which contains the full GPT model, optimizer, and training loop. Everything is fair game for it to modify: architecture, hyperparameters, batch size, optimizer settings. Then it enters a loop: → Modify the code → Train for exactly 5 minutes → Check if val loss improved → Keep or discard → Repeat You're not writing code anymore. You're writing `program. md` a Markdown file that acts as instructions for your AI research org. That's the flip. The human programs the research culture. The agent runs the experiments. The metric is val_bpb (validation bits per byte). Fixed 5-minute time budget per run. ~12 experiments per hour. ~100 experiments overnight. On a single H100. The craziest part? Karpathy wrote in the README: "One day, frontier AI research used to be done by meat computers in between eating, sleeping, and synchronizing using sound wave interconnect in the ritual of 'group meeting'. That era is long gone." He's not being poetic. He's describing what he actually built. This isn't a demo. It's a working autonomous research loop that runs on one GPU, has zero external dependencies, and is MIT licensed. The implication is insane: if the agent can modify its own training code and validate results… the bottleneck in AI research just shifted from human researchers to compute budget.
