Breaking news: The Supreme Court seemed deeply divided Tuesday over a challenge to a federal law that prosecutors used to charge more than 350 people who were part of the pro-Donald Trump mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. wapo.st/4aBre86
Several conservatives expressed concern about giving prosecutors broad power that they suggested would allow the government to target peaceful protesters or hecklers who disrupt a court proceeding. wapo.st/3U3MvQS
More that 100 rioters have already been convicted and sentenced under the charge, and two of the four charges Trump faces in D.C. are related to the statute. wapo.st/441prXC
@washingtonpost There's a nexus below which DOJ does not prosecute because of First Amendment protections. DOJ counsel masterfully explained that.
@washingtonpost The Supreme Court is just there to eliminate any law that comrade trump breaks
@washingtonpost It's NOT. THE. SAME. as heckling. I know Clarence Thomas, WHOSE WIFE HELPED PROMOTE THE VIOLENT INSURRECTION thinks so, but it is NOT the same as "disrupting a court proceeding". The GOP's political operatives on that court will likely rule that it is the same. IT ISN'T.
@washingtonpost Yeah but they weren’t peaceful. And aren’t these the same judges who went crazy when protesters showed up at their houses? lol the hypocrisy just cover for their dear orange leader
@washingtonpost Isn't that up to the judge or jury the prosecutor presents the case to? In the cases of these Jan 6 insurrectionist defendants, the judges and jurors have applied the facts and laws in finding guilt..here goes the insurrectionist SCOTUS cabal, rewriting the facts and law again.
@washingtonpost They don’t want fascists to be punished for attempting a coup against the U.S. government but they don’t have a problem with vigilantes attacking BLM or pro-democracy protesters in certain states.
@washingtonpost Do they remember what they decided regarding peaceful protesters recently? Holding the organizer responsible for everything that happens?
@washingtonpost These were not "hecklers."
