On my tweet about India being left for behind in the R&D field, some have said that this is because of India being a democracy. Just a reminder Which other third world, newly independent nation worked on space, atomic energy, cellular biology & more? This at a time when literacy levels were in the teens, there was absymal poverty. Plus, Brits had vanished with our capital & we were starting from scratch. THAT is how we could launch satellites at a fraction of the cost of the rest of the world. And the Chandrayan. There is no reason why we should not have been at the forefront in areas like AI, especially as enough technological talent exists in the country and the IT companies have huge amounts of cash. It only required will, which we showed during the initial years of a Republic but no longer. In my hometown of Lucknow alone, these were the research institutes set up in the 50s and 60s National Botanical Research Institute Central Drug Research Inst. Central Inst. for Medicinal & Aromatic Plants National Inst. of Paleo Sciences Besides those for the railways & geology IITs and IIMs were set up around the same time. It is only when I started travelling in the early 90s that I realised that even 30 years after our IIMs, almost no other Asian country had management institutes. The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR)was set up with a great deal of thought - far away from bureaucracy. The best people were sourced from around the world to head the scientific research institutes. We forget that the public sector was the backbone of industry in the early years. For example all the initial private sector pharmaceutical companies were set up by people trained in the public sector, like Dr. Reddy. We have to show similar laser focus on science research and technology now. Trolling me doesn't help! Neither does blaming reservations.
