You buy a modern $1,800 "smart" washer and dryer set. Five years later, the manufacturer decides to stop updating the mobile app software and shuts down the servers connecting to the machine. Suddenly, half the custom wash cycles and diagnostic tools on your perfectly functioning machine stop working overnight because the company deems your appliance "end-of-life." Tech companies didn't add Wi-Fi to your home appliances to make your life easier…….they added it so they could remotely degrade hardware you own and force you into a 5-year replacement cycle.
