A recent acquisition from a well known auction site. This photographic postcard was produced by a local company F. Futcher & Son, who were certainly active in the area during #WW1, however there is no date on the postcard. It does show the Map of Australia in beautiful detail.
#AnzacDay2024 marked in #Wiltshire, UK. Hurdcott Camp was established in 1915 but taken over entirely by Australian soldiers in 1917. They carved a huge map of Australia into a chalk hillside above the camp. The Map survives & a team of #volunteers maintain it in their memory.
On #AnzacDay2024, we will be standing on this hillside in #Wiltshire remembering members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. This chalk map of home was created by Australian soldiers in 1917.
The sun is shining, we are up on the #WW1 chalk Map of Australia!
A very successful day up on the Map of Australia. We managed to remove the weeds from AUSTRALIA and a big chunk of the northern section of the outline map and top up the chalk where required. Thanks to everyone who came today, your help was very much appreciated! #WW1 #Wiltshire
We are here working on the chalk Map of Australia, situated on a hillside in Wiltshire which was created by Australian soldiers in 1917. The Map is near the village of Compton Chamberlayne and is visible from the A30 Salisbury to Shaftesbury road.

Details of our upcoming visit to the WW1 chalk badge, Map of Australia this coming Sunday 18th February. Please join us if you can - send us a DM!
Sun 18th Feb 2024 we are back up on the Map of Australia, working in order to keep amazing #WW1 monument visible in the landscape. Created by #Australian soldiers at their training camp, Hurdcott in 1917, it is a lasting legacy to their presence in Wiltshire. Volunteers welcome!
An Australian soldier, buried at Tidworth Military Cemetery but who spent time at Hurdcott Camp.
Over 100 years ago, Australian Gunner Thomas Charters Forbes etched his name into the walls of a limestone cave in Naours. Today, the caves contain more than 3,000 inscriptions drawn by First World War soldiers on the Western Front. Read more: brnw.ch/21wGrdi.
Fantastic to hear that Cathy is being recognised for her work researching Australian #WW1 casualties, buried in the UK, nearly 3K of them. Hurdcott Camp was an important base for many, used for training & recuperation. The Map of Australia, created in 1917, is lasting legacy.

We say thank you & goodbye to Lt Col Anthony Birch who leaves us to head home to #Australia & welcome Major Michael Henderson. We are so grateful for the support given by @AustralianArmy personnel here in the UK in keeping the story of the Map of Australia & Hurdcott Camp alive.
Anzac Day 2023.
Anzac Day 1917 and 2023. A very special place to be this morning, standing looking down on the fields which held Hurdcott Camp. We remembered the sacrifice made by so many Australian and New Zealand service personnel. More photos of our service to follow. #AnzacDay2023 #Wiltshire
Details of our #AnzacDay2023 service tomorrow.
We have been very busy over the past couple of weeks, with today being our third trip up to the Map of Australia. We were joined by Australians Jack, (born Tasmania) with his lovely family, Patrick & Anita from Dorrigo & local ladies Sarah & Jo, plus Rich and Rex. A great day!
We will be working on this unique #Wiltshire landmark dating back to the First World War tomorrow, Saturday 22nd April. It was carved into the chalk downlands at Compton Chamberlayne by Australian soldiers in 1917. If you fancy joining us, DM for details, we'd love to see you!
