For a while I thought "well, maybe if you're a monastic then it's possible, but for a lay person you just have to deal with negative emotions". But no even monastics use "negative emotions" for good, like distress or shame.
When I first got into Buddhism in high school I really thought the goal was to be "happy" all the time and I'd try to never feel "bad" emotions. In retrospect I basically tried to dissociate all the time.
Now that I'm reading the Suttas, I see that negative emotions can be good!
The more I talk to my mother the more I realize how my speech is just like her's. She's very wordy, over explains, and will try convince you of things through a bunch of words. But of course that doesn't work on most people. It's endearing but also it's like looking in a mirror.
MCTB really spooked me out of doing vipassana. Tried to do samadhi but I could never get as engaged. Now I'm back to doing vipassana and I'm making way more progress again.
The autistic tendency to speak whatever information is deemed most useful rather than to say things that are emotionally resonant can be instantly cured by reading this tweet. If the captain needs to steer his boat, he must not rotate the wheel faster than the boat can handle.
"Heady" emotions consisting of 2-5 thoughts on repeat often just need to be listened to and validated into your conscious. Pushing them away only prolongs the rumination as they keep seeking to be listened to.
Couldn't do any work because I'm sad. Puts on sad music and suddenly i have the will to work???
Must be an impulse to self-destruct. Sad music breaks you down mentally and your mind is satisfied with that level of pain.
Apparently just about every Dharma teacher ends up going to therapy??? Fuck man. Like I'm happier day-to-day but my insane thoughts are so much louder.
