Microsoft's CEO says companies should treat powerful AI models as potential insider threats. That line stopped me. Insider threat is a security term, and the whole point of it is that the danger is already inside your house. Not some outside attacker you can firewall off. He's saying assume the model may already be compromised, and build an emergency brake so agentic models don't go rogue. Notice the framing too. Treat them as a threat. Not might become one someday. Treat them as one, today, and design around that. The emergency brake part is the piece I keep chewing on. Regulators have wanted something like that for runaway algorithms for years, and now it's coming from the person running one of the biggest AI companies on the planet. That's not nothing. When the guy selling the thing tells you to install the off switch, you should probably listen. And agentic models are exactly why. These are the ones that plan their own steps, call tools, book things, write code, hand tasks to other models. Useful. Also the first time I've genuinely felt like the "it could go off and do its own thing" worry isn't hypothetical sci-fi. Then the IMF's head sounded a completely different alarm. Not about control. About the labor market and taxation. That's a chain people don't connect often enough. AI hits jobs, jobs are where income tax comes from, and income taxation is what funds a lot of the stuff we take for granted. So the disruption doesn't stop at someone's paycheck. It keeps going into the public budget. Two warnings, two layers. One is about keeping the systems under control. The other is about who's left holding the bill when the work changes. I read a lot of AI takes and most of them only ever pick one of those.

Why is France such a high-risk country for bitcoin holders right now? Official records there show 90 crypto-related cases in just over 7 months. Kidnapping, extortion, threats, violent robbery. The Interior Ministry says that between January 1 and mid-August of 2026, police made 223 arrests, and 126 people tied to these cases were sent to prison. Do the math and that's a new case roughly every 2.5 days. Though there's no year-over-year comparison, so we can't actually tell whether things suddenly got worse. In the ministry's own words: they don't have stats for the same category of cases in 2025, because registration of this kind of incident only formally started on January 1, 2026. And these new numbers hit harder than what other public organizations have tallied for offline attacks. Chainalysis puts publicly known crypto "wrench attacks" in France at 30 as of mid-2026, but the firm says the real scale is "certainly larger." The security outfit gart.io counts 73 attacks in France so far this year, the most of any country. The US sits at 66. The UK at 27. A surge in physical attacks on crypto holders isn't just a pile of random cases. Leaked personal data is probably the main culprit. So why France? Wrench attacks aren't new. Bitcoin security researcher Jameson Lopp has been maintaining a public database of offline attacks for years: 365 cases across 60 countries between 2014 and 2026. France is at the top of that list. What's new is that violent crypto crime is spreading fast inside the country. Chainalysis shows attacks in Strasbourg, Marseille, Grenoble, Toulouse, Nantes. And the targets aren't foreign tourists who happen to hold crypto. Among victims whose residence is known, 93% are French locals. Eric Jardine, Chainalysis's chief researcher, told Cointelegraph the spike "very likely" traces back to one massive data leak. Leaks like that don't just expose financial info, he said. They reveal who holds crypto, where they live, and how to find them. Which is what makes these attacks so nasty. Thugs don't even need to show up with a wrench to demand seed phrases or force a transfer. The attack starts long before anyone knocks. First they have to pick a target: who owns something worth taking, where they live, how to get to them. Jardine points to a 2024 data leak at the French tax agency. A tax employee in the Paris area leaked taxpayers' personal identity info, financial records, and crypto holdings. That became the accelerant. Chainalysis's records show attacks spiking from late November of that year. Then in January 2026 there was another one: a breach at Waltio, a crypto tax filing service, handing criminals another big batch of usable info for flagging targets. Francis Pouliot, founder of the Canadian bitcoin exchange Bull Bitcoin, has repeatedly gone after Europe's DAC8 crypto reporting rules, which expand tax reporting and information sharing for crypto users across the EU. He says DAC8 turned "Know Your Customer" into "Kill Your Customer," and calls France the global capital of crypto kidnapping. The target isn't necessarily the bitcoin holder themselves, either. Chainalysis data shows a notable shift. As of early 2026, relatives and acquaintances make up about 25% to 30% of global crypto violence victims. In France, that share is over 40%. In May 2026, six suspects tried to kidnap Sebastien Borget's wife in France. One of them posed as a delivery courier to get her to open the door. In August, a couple in rural France dealt with three attempted break-ins. The previous owner of the house they bought was a wealthy crypto person. His tax info and address had been leaked to the dark web, so the criminals kept showing up. Something similar happened in 2025, when a crypto founder's father was kidnapped. The kidnappers allegedly cut off one of his fingers and sent it to his son, demanding $5.6 million in crypto as ransom. Jardine says going after relatives and people close to the holder tells you the criminals are doing serious reconnaissance first: watching social media, analyzing on-chain data, working off leaked records, or getting tips from someone on the inside. That flips the usual picture of a crypto attack. The person holding the wallet may not be the person the thugs are looking for at all. French authorities treat these as organized crime, coordinated through JUNALCO, their dedicated judicial unit for organized crime. The $5 wrench problem. Most crypto holders know the drill: guard your seed phrase, use a hardware wallet, test your setup, dodge phishing links. All of that still matters. But if someone already knows your name, your address, and that you hold something valuable, none of it does a thing. Cryptography can protect a wallet. It can't stop a guy with a $5 wrench.
