When people put CC license on their work, allowing derivs without permission, is AI use one of the ones they allow? When I say CC-BY on my YT videos, does that mean someone can use them all to train an AI/bot to behave/sound like me? Cc @EnglishOER @xolotl @steelwagstaff
@Bali_Maha @EnglishOER @xolotl Great question. In the USA, courts are still hearing cases about whether use of copyrighted material for training generative AI tools is a 'fair use'. Tech companies have already done it, without paying for licenses or providing attribution on the resulting generative output.
@steelwagstaff @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER Again, this is where I try to separate my attempts to understand the legal status quo and possible futures from any preferences and goals I might have for how I'd like things to work.
@steelwagstaff @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER I think Steel is right to say that things are still/will be worked out in court cases. This is one of the issues with copyright: Any issues most often have to be worked out with lawyers/in court, and so claiming and protecting rights takes *resources*...
@steelwagstaff @Bali_Maha @EnglishOER Believing copyright is on your side mostly gives you the opportunity to spend money to pursue claims that may win. Copyright doesn't seem to benevolently protect the little guy...
