Would you sacrifice speed for better tone? Eric Johnson explains why his preferred picking approach isn't necessarily the most efficient, but it gives him the sound he's looking for. Drawing inspiration from Eric Clapton, pedal steel guitarists, and Wes Montgomery, Eric reminds us that technique is ultimately about personal expression. The best technique isn't always the fastest. It's the one that helps you sound like you. Learn with Eric Johnson at TrueFire: f.mtr.cool/47uy3kz06r #EricJohnson #GuitarTone #GuitarTips #GuitarPicking #TrueFire

NASA just shared this insane new shot of the Grand Canyon from space 💥 From orbit, the Grand Canyon still looks immense—a vast, winding scar sliced into the Colorado Plateau by the Colorado River over roughly 5–6 million years. Stretching 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and more than a mile deep, its layered walls and dramatic depth remain unmistakable even from hundreds of miles above Earth. Yet the view is also a quiet reminder of scale: what feels monumental to us on the ground shrinks into a single, striking detail when seen against the full curve of the planet.

Every time Vance talks I am going to give money to the Dr Amy Acton gubernatorial campaign.

JD Vance just held an outrageous news conference in which he defended Ramaswamy's vile attacks on Amy Acton, agreed with Steve Witkoff's assessment of Putin as a "humanitarian," and had the gall to claim "there is no person who hates the idea of people enriching themselves

Meta took down the No Kings organizing page today - the biggest day of protest this fall. They provided zero explanation. It stayed down for the entire afternoon until most of the protests were done. Outrageous. Put this on the January investigation list.

George Harrison stands at the gates of Friar Park, staring at what most people would call a disaster. The Victorian mansion is decaying. Grass grows through the floors. The once-famous gardens are wild and overrun. Greenhouses have collapsed. Grottoes are buried. Paths have vanished under decades of neglect. He’s 27. The Beatles have just broken up. He could go anywhere. Do anything. The world is waiting for his next move. Instead, he buys the ruin and starts digging. Not as a hobby. As a way of life. He hires ten gardeners and works beside them from dawn until midnight, hands in the soil. His sister-in-law sees the place and asks what he’s thinking. George doesn’t explain. He just keeps working. His son Dhani grows up watching his father gardening by moonlight, squinting in the dark because the shadows hide the imperfections that bothered him during the day. The music industry keeps calling — albums, tours, interviews. More George Harrison, the Beatle. George wants to plant trees. Friar Park isn’t just a garden. It’s a strange Victorian dream: caves, tunnels, a four-acre Alpine rock garden topped with a miniature Matterhorn, and gnomes everywhere. He even photographs himself among them for All Things Must Pass — then goes back to pruning. When a nursery owner mentions slow sales, George buys one of everything. When someone offers 800 types of maple trees, he takes them all. His wife Olivia remembers him saying, “It’s not my garden, Liv.” He saw himself as a caretaker. The garden didn’t belong to him — he belonged to it. By 1980, he publishes his autobiography and dedicates it “to gardeners everywhere.” He writes that he’s simple. He doesn’t want the business full-time. He’s a gardener. He plants flowers and watches them grow. Journalists visit and call it un-rock-star-like. George doesn’t mind. He’s lived Beatlemania, stadium screams, cultural revolutions. Compared to restoring hedges, it felt empty. After John Lennon’s murder, the gates close for good. George and Olivia keep working — not for visitors, but for the work itself. He dies in 2001. Today, the gardens are considered masterpieces of Victorian landscaping. Olivia still tends them. The estate remains private. George Harrison chose dirt under his fingernails over applause. And in that choice, he found something stadiums never gave him. Freedom.

Happy birthday to Barney Kessel, born on this day in 1923! A jazz guitarist who moved easily between small-group swing and the studio. Long associated with Oscar Peterson, and a first-call player on countless sessions.

Well, let’s think a bit about what Trump might want from Putin. 1. Help getting out of the Iran catastrophe. (He thinks Putin is willing and able to help him through his “mediation,” even though the IRGC already has absolutely no use for it. It’s far more advantageous for them to keep holding the global economy by the throat in the Strait of Hormuz and thereby finish sinking Trump.) 2. Russian bot farms, hackers, and any other form of illegal assistance and interference in American elections to save Trump from disaster. (Hello to the hordes of MAGA bots on temporarily occupied Twitter!) 3. Money and assets, including Lukoil’s overseas assets and imaginary lucrative contracts involving Russian resources. (Trump and his entourage genuinely think they’ll be allowed to line their pockets with all this, rather than simply having the same carrot dangled in front of them indefinitely, even though that carrot effectively belongs to the Middle Kingdom and Emperor Xi by now.) The price of this package: the betrayal of Ukraine and Europe, and the complete collapse of America’s role as the world’s hegemon.

Guitar Gods Unleashed @gguworld

Richard Bona was a jazz guitarist in Cameroon until he heard a Jaco Pastorius record, then stayed up for days straight trying to figure out how Jaco got that sound. He switched to bass and became so good that Joe Zawinul, Jaco’s old bandmate, called him “the only bass player after Jaco who can make me smile.” Here he is in 1997.
