Africa’s most ruthless dictator just murdered another critic abroad. News in Canada? Barely. Canada has backed Paul Kagame while he’s assassinated countless opponents, including a president that ignited the 1994 genocide. On Monday the remains of Rwandan dissident Sgt. Maj. Robert Kabera were found just outside Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The popular YouTuber, who fled Rwanda in 2020, was beheaded. Kabera was a critic of Rwanda’s ‘president for life’. For more than three decades Kagame has brazenly assassinated critics across East Africa. Rwanda also assassinated (or attempted to) several former top officials in South Africa. After former Rwandan spy chief, turned Kagame critic Patrick Karegeya, was strangled to death in a South African hotel in 2014 Kagame boasted about it and the regime’s number two said, “when you choose to be a dog, you die like a dog, and the cleaners will wipe away the trash.” In another brazen move, the regime snatched Paul Rusesabagina, who became a celebrity from the film Hotel Rwanda, from Dubai in 2020. Several western critics have also been targeted by Kagame’s henchmen in Europe. Author of Rwanda's 30-Year Assault on Congo: The Crimes, the Criminals, and the Cover-Up and In Praise of Blood: The Crimes of the Rwandan Patriotic Front Judi Rever, who lives in Montreal, was placed under protection by Belgian State Security Service in 2014 when they discovered a credible plot against her. Trained at the US military’s officer academy in Kansas, Kagame has long been Ottawa’s favoured African dictator. Despite Rwanda launching a new invasion of eastern Congo in late 2021, Justin Trudeau repeatedly met Kagame and deepened diplomatic ties. Last year Mark Carney’s government announced sanctions over Rwanda’s occupation of Congo, but Ottawa has barely changed course. Canada’s high commissioner met Kagame two months ago and Ottawa continues to provide some aid to Rwanda. Canadian assistance has taken many forms. Famed ‘humanitarian’ Canadian general Romeo Dallaire has greatly enabled the “Butcher of Africa’s Great Lakes” region. Three decades after Rwanda first invaded Congo purportedly to target genocidaires, Dallaire promoted Kigali’s apologia for mass slaughter there. As I detailed last year in “Dallaire continuesto justify Kagame’s crimes”, the former general explicitly justified Rwanda’s most recent phase of violence in Congo as defensive even though Rwanda has been pillaging of eastern Congo’s minerals for thirty years. Dallaire assisted Kagame when he was dispatched to the country in late 1993. In his 2005 book Le Patron de Dallaire Parle (The Boss of Dallaire Speaks), Jacques-Roger Booh Booh, a former Cameroon foreign minister and overall head of the UN mission in Rwanda, claims Dallaire had little interest in the violence unleashed by Kagame’s RPF despite reports of summary executions in areas controlled by them. RPF soldiers were regularly seen in Dallaire’s office, with the Canadian commander describing the Rwandan army’s position in Kigali. This prompted Booh Booh to wonder if Dallaire “also shared UNAMIR military secrets with the RPF when he invited them to work in his offices.” Another Canadian enabler of Kagame is Governor General Louise Arbour. As chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Arbour wasn’t interested in evidence suggesting Kagame’s RPF was responsible for assassinating Rwandan president Juvénal Habyarimana, Burundian president Cyprien Ntaryamira and most of the Rwandan military command, which sparked the 1994 genocide. According to French government investigators and the National Post, she refused to investigate evidence implicating the RPF in shooting down Habyarimana’s airplane. In 1996 former ICTR investigator Michael Hourigan compiled evidence based on the testimony of three RPF informants who claimed “direct involvement in the 1994 fatal rocket attack upon the President’s aircraft” and “specifically implicated the direct involvement of [Kagame]” and other RPF members. But when Hourigan delivered the evidence to her in early 1997, Arbour was “aggressive” and “hostile,” according to Hourigan. Despite initially supporting the investigation surrounding who shot down the plane, the ICTR’s chief prosecutor now advised Hourigan that the “investigation was at an end because in her view it was not in our [ICTR] mandate.” When the Globe and Mail confirmed Kagame was responsible for the political killing that unleashed the genocidal violence in 2016, Arbour sought to shift the blame for failing to fulfill the court’s mandate onto ‘Africa’s Hitler’. As part of supporting US/UK dominance of the region, Canada has enabled a politician who played a significant role in the violent capture of state power in three countries (Uganda 1986, Rwanda 1994 and Congo 1997). Paul Kagame’s ruthlessness is remarkable; Ottawa’s assistance shameful.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs wants the ability to campaign to revoke my wife and millions of other Canadians’ citizenship. And anyone who believes they wouldn’t seek to expel opponents of genocide, hasn’t been paying attention. Historically, Canadian Jewish organizations were viewed as sympathetic to refugees and immigrants because there’s a history of Jewish expulsion. No more. As part of their defence of whatever crimes Israel commits, they now advocate against immigrants. The Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation has called to deport non-citizens who back resistance to colonial rule while hardline Zionist influencers regularly post about deporting protesters. In a major escalation of their anti-immigrant agenda, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) has been lobbying government officials to expand the grounds by which Canadian citizenship can be revoked. According to filings with the federal lobbyist registry, the official advocacy agent of Canada’s Jewish federations expressed: “Continued support for revocation of citizenship in cases involving war crimes, crimes against humanity, terrorism, and extreme promotion of hate; strengthened screening to bar entry and deny citizenship to individuals who pose security threats or have ties to extremist or terrorist organizations; removal of individuals already in Canada who obtained status through false representation; establishment of a fast-track removal stream for high-risk individuals linked to foreign extremist organizations; accelerated removals for individuals convicted of violent crimes; and standalone immigration consequences for expressing support for listed terrorist entities, even in the absence of criminal convictions.” Since March CIJA representatives have met staff from the Prime Minister’s Office and Public Safety Canada, as well as the director of CSIS and multiple MPs, to discuss stripping the citizenship of Israel critics. Citizenship acquired by birth is permanent, which is unlikely to change since revoking a ‘Canadian-only’ citizens’ status would make them stateless. That would defy Canada’s obligations under the Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. As such, it is extremely unlikely CIJA is seeking or could win legislation that would allow them to target the citizenship of Canada-born individuals. But some right-wing forces, including the Stephen Harper government, promote two-tiered citizenship. In 2014 the Conservatives adopted legislation that allowed for revoking citizenship of the eight million Canadians born elsewhere if they were convicted of terrorism, espionage or treason. Second-class citizenship legislation was largely repealed by the Justin Trudeau government, which argued “a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian.” Currently, only those born elsewhere can have their citizenship revoked for lying or fraud in acquiring said status. According to a federal government website on “Revoking citizenship”, “Your Canadian citizenship may be revoked (taken away) if you: · Committed fraud · Misrepresented yourself · Knowingly hid information on an immigration or citizenship application.” · CIJA wants that to change. In part, CIJA’s push to revoke citizenship is simply a racist dog whistle to smear anti-genocide protesters. They are promoting the idea that Muslims/Arabs/Brown people are importing antisemitism/extremism/terrorism. But there’s also a more concrete aim. They want a new way to discipline/scare opponents of genocide and Israel’s endless crimes across the region. CIJA’s pursuit of “standalone immigration consequences for expressing support for listed terrorist entities, even in the absence of criminal convictions” means they could press an immigration official to revoke someone’s citizenship without even requiring a criminal conviction. They could target someone for saying, “the Samidoun Palestinian Political Prisoners Solidarity Network has done important work in opposing Canadian complicity in genocide.” That statement is, of course, true. Listed as a terrorist organization two years ago, Vancouver based Samidoun organized demonstrations against genocide and played a substantial role in driving anti-Palestinian BC NDP MP Selina Robinson out of cabinet. The main organization that got Samidoun listed, CIJA, is seeking to expand the list of entities one could lose their citizenship for “expressing support for”. In response to Palestine Action Canada claiming responsibility for vandalizing (mostly red paint) a Peterborough facility of Elbit owned arms firm GeoSpectrum Technologies, last week CIJA reiterated its call to designate Palestine Action Canada as a terrorist entity. If they succed in getting Palestine Action Canada listed and convince the government to adopt their citizenship revocation proposal, CIJA and other advocates of genocide would go after someone who said, “Palestine Action Canada should be celebrated for seeking to disrupt the flow of arms to commit genocide.” If CIJA succeeds in expanding the parameters under which people can lose their citizenship, they will use it against opponents of genocide. It would be an escalation of their efforts — often successful — to have opponents of genocide fired, jailed or suspended from school. In the short term, it’s unlikely CIJA will succeed in their maximalist citizenship aims. But just the fact they are seeking this type of leverage demonstrates their authoritarian character. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs would definitely push to revoke the citizenship of thousands of Canadians to protect their belove genocidal Jewish supremacist state.

This is how the media works. The Hollywood Reporter has been chasing us for comment, so they know exactly what our Ali G campaign is about. Instead of putting that to Sacha Baron Cohen, they handed him a different premise: that calls for cinemas not to screen the film are really about his support for Israel. It’s the same link the Daily Mail and The Telegraph have tried to draw. It wasn’t true there, and it isn’t true now. But it did its job. Cohen never had to answer whether Ali G is racist. He got to talk about Jews being targeted instead. See how they're all working in conjunction? Legacy media sets up the talking point, then hands it over for the subject to run with. So back to the question nobody in this exchange wants to touch. Ali G trades on a caricature of Black British and Jamaican culture. That’s our complaint. It always has been, and thousands of people backed it.
