Kauffman's notion of the adjacent possible captures this well. You cannot predict how systems (biological, technological) evolve many steps ahead (cannot predict that the machine would provide an excellent play thing for a racoon). Many systems are radically open-ended.

The oldest recipe in the world wasn’t even made by homo sapiens. This recipe for Neanderthal flatbread is based on a discovery of the oldest cooked food, found in a 70,000 year old cave complex. It was written by an archaeologist who excavated the site. cambridge.org/core/journals/…
Very proud to have contributed (even if only a bit) to the Neurodesk project! The paper is finally out: rdcu.be/dvqwU . If you are interested in reproducible neuroimaging the Neurodesk platform is for you!
My latest for Aeon. 30 years ago we gave up the assumption that language is needed for consciousness, with great results. Now it's time to give up the assumption that it requires a complex brain. tinyurl.com/27cffsse

Artificial lifeforms are super fascinating to watch. These self-organizing, self-replicating, “lifeforms” emerged from a continuous time cellular automata system called Flow-Lenia. Lenia is a family of CAs generalizing Conway’s Game of Life to continuous space, time and states.

AI writing is not detectable, but teachers think they can tell, creating problems. In a small study where instructors were asked to grade essays without knowing which were AI written, the best-written human essays got penalized because readers assumed they must be AI created.

@lemire People should also criticize their own research more. Admit the shortcomings of their algorithm. Lots of papers released that have fundamental flaws that you only learn by spending lots of time implementing them. Seems that nobody wants to publish failures. Only success stories.
