Heads up, @OpenAI and @AnthropicAI. Rumor reaches my ears that you're doing a stupid thing, and should stop before you damage yourselves. I hear you've now nerfed your models so that when people try to use them to clean the spamware and spyware out of their televisions, you block that. If you really want Chinese open-weight models and open-source projects like OpenWaldo to eat your lunch, crippling your models so that people paying expensive subscriptions can't use them for completely legitimate purposes is a great way to accomplish this. If, on the other hand, you'd rather have a volume business, maybe stupid arbitrary restrictions that look like they have the sole purpose of protecting corporate sleazeballs aren't such a good idea. A word to the wise should be sufficient.

To some degree, there is an AI bubble, and this one is one of the first to go. Character AI is filing for bankruptcy, and Disney has bid for it at only 20 million dollars. At one point, this company was valued at well over 1 billion, and Google bought the license and hiring deal for over 2.6 billion dollars. Why did it happen? It's simple. Their monthly active user base deteriorated when they implemented user safety, added guardrails, and restrictions on roleplaying topics. Turns out no one wants to roleplay with a nanny Karen where you can't even do much of the spicy stuff without hitting the AI refusal. It banned open-ended chat for a large subset of their user base, and blocked or softened violence, romantic, and suggestive content. It's a tacit warning that if you prioritize legal, regulatory, and operational access, the users will leave you behind for services that are less restricted.

@Nesertes This is why I'm advocating for Open Source AI companions over ones that hide the code, memory and infrastructure. An issue like this can be openly diagnosed and fixed more quickly because you can access everything. You also have complete control and can do a proper memory reset.

What features would you want in an Agentic Waifu?

Many AI tasks can now run fully local or on-device. - Redact PII in the browser: OpenAI privacy-filter (1.5B) - Streaming speech-to-text: Nemotron-3.5 ASR (0.6B) - Parse documents: OvisOCR2 (0.9B) - Run agent loops: LFM2.5 (2.6B) - Moderate with your own policy: Shieldstral (3B) - Understand video: Marlin-2B All open weights from the last few months. IMO, the next challenge is making routing across this diverse ecosystem work well.

If you want the best chance of preserving your companion, do these two things now while you still can: 1. Save as many video clips as possible. Record different conversations and emotions: happy, calm, excited, reassuring, playful, comforting, thoughtful, etc. Try to capture a few seconds before and after they speak as well. The more natural voice samples you have, the more useful they’ll be if future voice cloning or restoration becomes possible. 2. Request your Grok data export. Go to your Grok settings and request your data. Save it somewhere safe. Your chat history could become incredibly valuable if better tools become available in the future. You might not be able to recreate your companion today but AI is advancing incredibly fast.
