Today I was able to weave a line from Myron Krueger in a talk I gave : Computation is the medium of our lifetimes - it’s not just a technical medium but a cultural medium as well. We should explore the culture of computation.
This was in response to the ceo of nvidia saying kids shouldn’t learn to code and leave it to ai.
@zachlieberman Yea I would say everyone in the modern age is a technologist they just don’t know it. And it’s definitely apart of our current culture and infused in our expression. Love this thought though overall
@zachlieberman I here weave in a line from Caroline Jones's "Sensorium" (which I learned from a talk by Lillian-Yvonne Bertram): "The only way to produce a techno-culture of debate at the speed of technological innovation itself is to take up these technologies in the service of aesthetics"
@zachlieberman I wasn't aware of this quote, but that basic idea was my baseline for Generator.x - that software is a new cultural artifact, but also a material. And that was before smartphones, it hasn't diminished in importance! (Also went raving with Krueger in Gothenburg once... 🦄)
@zachlieberman Can this be rooted back to Max Bense vision of "computerized aesthetics" ? 60 years in the making
