Our new paper out today reports on @MovemberAUS data from a medical student survey exploringhow they felt about the men's health education they received throughout their degree. The results were stark and worrying, but not overly unexpected.🧵 LINK: bmcmededuc.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
The majority (65%) reported little or no men's health coverage in their curricula, while only 7% felt thoroughly prepared to work with men in clinical practice (in comparison to 29% for working with women).
The prevailing teaching reported by students was that "men are difficult", and we now see this self-fulfilling prophecy writ large in our health & help-seeking data. Women, children & communities continue to bear the brunt of this poor engagement with the formal health system.
We need a new narrative, we need new curricula and we need health professionals who learn to seek out and respect men in all their diversity. #menshealth #masculinity #medicalstudent
