@FeedingAlliance One that is more interesting is use of safe medications in pregnancy. So many moms won't use the safest drugs for fear of potential harm to foetus, causing real harm to themselves

@alomshaha Yep. People ask my husband 'how was your holiday?' when he comes back to work from shared parental leave. They don't ask me that! Implicit assumption that he isn't *really* doing childcare.

@drruthannharpur Yes! I had an emergency cesarean at 34 weeks, theatre staff lovely and prepared me to do skin to skin when my son was born but it wasn't possible as he needed NICU and I didn't hold him on the day he was born...made me sad and I wish it were different but has no impact on (1/2)

@TheRustler83 @VikiLovesFACS @kallmemeg This is how scientists know whether a difference between groups is "real" (i.e. significant) or not, and it really matters because it tells us whether to look for a cause of the difference or whether the difference is random chance

It's likely that the mean of the two groups wouldn't be identical, but the difference would just be down to chance. If you calculated the p value for this situation it would (1/2)

@TheRustler83 @VikiLovesFACS @kallmemeg probably show you that the difference is down to chance. A P value calculation uses the difference between the values and the number of measurements you took to tell you whether the difference is likely chance or reflecting a real-life difference (2/2)

@drruthannharpur Terrible article! What's the evidence for babies being "ready" at different times?! Sounds like a folklore rationale against a mostly judicious medical intervention on the grounds that it's best to let things be - when will people learn that's often not so in obstetrics?!

This isn't a technicality, statistical significance is a measure of whether the difference is meaningful or due to chance. I genuinely urge you to understand this as your conclusion is wrong.

@ENirenberg And that it's definitely unethical to withhold a drug with demonstrated efficacy and safety (proportionate to disease, expected population of use etc), on the grounds of not having enough safety data (esp if no other tx). Where would they like that safety data to come from?!
