Those who point to non-recognition of Palestinian statehood by previous NZ govts ignore that a UN-classified genocide in Gaza is occurring, and Israel now rejects the two-state solution that NZ, the UN and other nations have long supported. That is a big contextual difference.

We can assume that there is something at work behind the scenes for NZ to refuse the Palestinian right to Statehood. Whether that factor is domestic, foreign or a combination of both is a matter of conjecture but it removes NZ as a champion of a global norms-based order. Craven.

Advice to PM Albanese of Australia: Do not sit down in the gilded White House humiliation chair for a public excoriation by Trump right after Australia recognized the right to Palestinian statehood in the wake of the Kirk canonization ceremonies. The timing is particularly bad.

For all the talk of faith, freedom, free speech and Christian values, the Kirk memorial was a cynical celebration of intolerance posing as righteous sacrifice. Some of the speeches were an incitement, not just a wink and a nod to darker impulses. Rough times ahead.

Irony is lost and hypocrisy is strong when those who yell the most about defending "free speech" are also those that work the hardest to get people fired/punished for voicing personal politics-related opinions on social media. Lots of projection in their finger-pointing as well.

We have said it elsewhere but it is worth repeating here. For all of the talk about free speech, post-mortem canonisation and sanitising of the murdered provocateur's actions, the main lesson is that hate-mongering reaps what it sows. We must pause, reflect and try to do better.

Putin went to Alaska, looked into Trump's eyes and saw a blustering bully posing as a power-mongerer, knowing that Trump would never seriously follow on his threats against Russia. Netanyahu looked into the same eyes and saw the same thing. That helps explain their strategies.
