I use a Flat Stanley style assignment in my courses to get students more engaged, and I’m always surprised by how much they love it. It sparks creativity, builds connection, and invites real investment in the material. Fun, creative prompts can go a long way in higher ed.

What I love about teaching is creating spaces where students feel supported. When there’s trust and flexibility, students engage more deeply. The class where students were the most immersed in the material and most invested was also the one with the most flexibility.

One thing I’ve learned from teaching different courses and class sizes (35 to 250+) is how important it is to be clear on what I value. “No late work” policies can make sense logistically in large classes, but I’ve realized they don’t align with my teaching philosophy.

Just wrapped up teaching my 1st course as the sole instructor, and it was an incredible experience! My students were so supportive as I experimented w/new assignment styles—they were my ‘tester class,’ but they loved them and gave amazing feedback. I’m inspired for my next class!

When I teach professionals, I sometimes put them in groups to discuss and take notes. I specifically name that women are overwhelmingly called upon to serve as recorders, so I ask that every group assign a man to do this. The reactions are *wild*. Regularly, one man makes a 1/x
