Whether this turns out to be the biggest crash in history or not, I think the underlying message is important: don't wait for a crisis to start preparing.
Build skills. Create additional income. Keep learning. Don't rely entirely on one source of income or assume the good times will last forever.
Preparation gives you options when things change.
This is exactly what I'm learning. It's easy to overthink whether something is good enough to post, especially when you're starting with a small audience.
At some point you just have to put yourself out there, learn from what gets a response, improve and keep going. The game is consistency, not perfection.
There’s truth in this. When you raise your standards, you naturally become more selective about who you let into your life and what you’re willing to tolerate.
Sometimes the loneliness isn't because nobody is around. It's because very few people genuinely understand what you're trying to build.
Nobody sees every sacrifice.
The late nights.
The financial pressure.
The doubts.
The days you don't feel like doing anything.
The moments when quitting would be easier.
But your family doesn't need to see all of that.
They just need to see you keep showing up.
Keep working.
Keep building.
Keep providing.
Keep becoming a better man.
You don't have to be loud about it.
Just don't stop.
@TheZigZiglar Exactly. What's the point of building a successful life if you have to become someone you don't respect to get there?
Money, status and achievements mean far more when you can look back and know you earned them without compromising your character.
This is something I'm learning myself. Sometimes you don't need a new direction — you need higher standards for yourself. A new environment won't fix the habits, excuses or compromises you're carrying with you.
Change what you tolerate, change what you do, and eventually your life has to change with it.
I agree. The difficult seasons are often where you build the qualities you need for the life you're trying to create. You don't need to enjoy the pain, but you can choose to let it make you stronger, wiser and more resilient.
There really is no shortcut around becoming the man capable of handling the life you want.
@ValaAfshar This is something I'm learning. When money is tight, it's tempting to spend what little you have on immediate comfort. But investing in skills can change your earning potential for years to come.
Buy things when you can. But buy skills that can help you buy your time back.
@Markmanson I think there's a lot of truth in this. If you don't value yourself, you're more likely to accept poor treatment, set weak boundaries and settle for relationships that don't serve you.
How you see yourself influences what you believe you deserve from others.
@patrickbetdavid That's where character really shows. Anyone can do the right thing when people are watching. How you treat people when there's nothing to gain and nobody to impress says far more about who you are.
I collapsed.
Last week I collapsed.
And what happened the day before has made me think very differently about the words we speak and the things we wish for.
As the father and provider of my family, I carry a lot of responsibility.
My wife, my three children and all the animals we have rely on me. I have to go to work, bring money home, buy the food, pay the bills and keep a roof over everyone's head.
Recently, the financial pressure became overwhelming.
A client hadn't given me as many hours as I'd expected, and I was looking at potentially not having enough money to cover the bills over the next few months.
The day before I collapsed, I had a breakdown.
I said something I would normally never say:
“I may as well be dead.”
The following day, I suddenly became extremely ill.
I developed severe stomach pain, diarrhoea and a temperature. On the way home I nearly blacked out while driving.
Then, when I got home, I collapsed.
My blood pressure dropped so low it became almost unreadable. I couldn't speak properly. I was slurring my words. I had pins and needles throughout my arms, legs and face. I was unconscious, and my wife told me afterwards that I looked dead.
I ended up in hospital.
Thankfully, the doctors couldn't find anything seriously wrong.
But I couldn't stop thinking about what I'd said the day before.
I'm not saying I can prove that my words caused what happened to me.
But the timing scared me.
My parents used to tell me:
“Be careful what you wish for, because you might actually get it.”
I've spent years reading about mindset and the power of our thoughts, and this experience made those words hit differently.
Maybe there is more to it than we understand.
Maybe it's God listening.
Maybe it's the universe.
Maybe it's simply the way our thoughts influence our actions, decisions and behaviour.
I don't know.
But I do know this:
Be careful what you say.
Be careful what you say about yourself.
Be careful what you say about other people.
Be careful what you wish for.
Because you never know what consequences your words might have.
If you constantly tell yourself you're worthless, eventually you may start believing it.
If you constantly tell yourself you'll fail, you may stop trying.
If you constantly speak negativity into your life, you may eventually start living it.
So I'm choosing my words more carefully.
I want to speak life into myself, my family and the people around me.
Think positive. Speak positive. Build positive.
Because you really should be careful what you wish for.
You might just get it.
And if you do, you may deeply regret the words you once wished were true.
@Cobratate Dreams don't just come true — you have to work towards them. That's what makes them interesting. The possibility gives you the vision, but the work is what gives you a chance of making it real.
I sometimes wonder if the push for treating everyone exactly the same has gone too far. Men and women aren't identical, and that doesn't mean one is better than the other.
If the underlying causes and experiences are different, surely the approach to helping them should be different too.
I'm probably somewhere in the middle, but my mission is to make money.
Not just for the sake of having more money, but because financial freedom gives me the ability to provide for my family, create opportunities and build the life I want for them. The money is the goal, but the reason behind it is much bigger.
This is exactly what I'm discovering. Entrepreneurship isn't just about building a business — it forces you to confront your own weaknesses.
I'm building my company while working full-time, and the uncomfortable parts are often where I'm learning the most. I'm nowhere near where I want to be yet, but the person I'm becoming through the process may be worth more than the money itself.
Precisely what I'm doing. And honestly, if it wasn't for AI, I probably wouldn't have started.
It's given me the tools and confidence to build something that I wouldn't have thought was possible on my own. I'm still working full-time while building it, but at least I'm finally taking the shot.
I agree. I'm a team manager by title, but I prefer to be seen as a leader. I trust people to get on with their jobs and follow up at agreed intervals rather than constantly looking over their shoulder.
If someone is struggling, I support them. If someone is taking the piss, I address it. Give people freedom, but don't mistake freedom for liberty to take advantage.
@Cobratate I’ve never really felt like I fit the mould of an ordinary man. Maybe that’s why I’ve always been driven to build something different rather than simply accept the life put in front of me.
@Cobratate I can vouch for the fact that some of the hardest periods of my life taught me more about responsibility, resilience and character than the easy ones ever did.
Suffering doesn't automatically make someone noble, but how you respond to it can change the man you become.
