More evidence that cameras shouldn't always be on: Pairs were just as smart under audio-only communication—and they had more equal participation. Visual cues can be distracting. You don't always need to see people's faces to collaborate effectively. journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…
@AdamMGrant @youngjikim @awoolley95 @prernachikersal @dabbish Except that it can make life harder for people who are blind and rely on lip reading. People do not always speak clearly and lip reading helps the message get across.
@AdamMGrant @youngjikim @awoolley95 @prernachikersal @dabbish Couldn't agree more.
@AdamMGrant @pingles @youngjikim @awoolley95 @prernachikersal @dabbish I think @Gladwell nailed it in Blink when he said judges performed better when the faces we're hidden They could solely focus on the musicians sound
@AdamMGrant @youngjikim @awoolley95 @prernachikersal @dabbish What do you do with the visual cues when you are face to face?
@AdamMGrant @youngjikim @awoolley95 @prernachikersal @dabbish Vert interesting, thank you. I think an artificial medium (anything other than physical face to face) must be designed to support behaviors rather than replicate an environment. People focus attention selectively, and audio cues can trigger visual attention, which is more active.
@AdamMGrant @youngjikim @awoolley95 @prernachikersal @dabbish Really interesting paper. Losing one sense heightens others. This will lead to a different balance to the collaboration. Also the effect of distraction is difficult to measure in test conditions but no doubt has an larger impact when working remotely.
@AdamMGrant @youngjikim @awoolley95 @prernachikersal @dabbish Here’s some more on this from Adam’s feed. news.stanford.edu/2021/02/23/fou…
@AdamMGrant @youngjikim @awoolley95 @prernachikersal @dabbish My curiosity lies in the longterm affects of not seeing ones team for long periods. It's fine to have meetings without seeing them but seeing their faces should humanise the experience and aide in bonding. However, this would only be applicable if those present were comfortable.
