The hallmark of an open mind is not letting your ideas become your identity. If you define yourself by your opinions, questioning them is a threat to your integrity. If you see yourself as a curious person or a lifelong learner, changing your mind is a moment of growth.
@AdamMGrant An open mind tied to a set of important core values like integrity. Some things are timeless.
@AdamMGrant I get really excited when I find something which deeply changes my mind... it's physically pleasurable to me.
@AdamMGrant We (as humans) are at the mercy of our ideas. Many don’t know how to hold those ideas loosely, meaning, having the ability to somewhat transcend those ideas to view them objectively (as much as possible) giving rise to growth (and eventual wisdom).
@AdamMGrant "Minds are like parachutes-they only function when open." ~ Lord Thomas Dewar
@AdamMGrant It’s an interesting idea that it separates your opinions from your identity. For a lifelong learner part, it reminded me of saying "Change in the sense of values is the result of intelligence", which I keep in mind.
@AdamMGrant True. You are not your idea, and if you identify too closely with your ideas, you will take offense when they are challenged. Our job in this life is not to shape ourselves into some ideal we imagine we ought to be, but to find out who we already are and become it.
