Cybernetics for the 21st Century II started yesterday with Bruce Clarke, every Tuesday until end of June: with K Allado-McDowell, David Bates,Kostas Terzidis,Toru Nishigaki,Anna Greenspan,Orit Halpern,Tony Fry,Bruce Sterling,Chen Qiufan, Luciana Parisi philosophyandtechnology.network/6529/lectures-…
Using the gross code, you can protect 12 logical qubits for roughly a million cycles of error checks using 288 physical qubits. Doing roughly the same task with the surface code would require nearly 3,000 qubits.
If you're into robots and brains, this video is for you. @dileeplearning (~14:00) gives an excellent explanation of what's wrong with LLMs: they don't have a world model. I have a problem with neuroscience research. They largely ignore the perceptual generalization problem. 1/2

Folks, something seems to be happening... We show that our theory of gravity is valid down to the shortest distances arxiv.org/abs/2402.17844. and that it can explain the expansion of the universe and galactic rotation without dark matter or dark energy arxiv.org/abs/2402.19459 1/
Stop worrying about cosmic rays and learn to love gap engineering! arxiv.org/abs/2402.15644 In our new work, we fix the main cause of qubit errors during high-energy impacts on half the qubits in our checkerboard superconducting qubit array. 1/5

Just a friendly reminder that, while fault-tolerant quantum computing will likely require logical qubits, having logical qubits alone does not mean having a fault-tolerant quantum computer.
I’m excited for this new article in the Notices of the AMS (@amermathsoc). In it, we describe several nice analogies between linear algebra and category theory and discuss connections to language and LLMs. Coauthored with John Terilla and @gastaldi_gianni. ams.org/journals/notic…
How I found my dad's master's thesis on a random table at McGill... a short story. Recently one of my friends messaged me this picture. You see, a grad student in the math department left out a bunch of category theory textbooks for other students before she left McGill

Delivering the delivery vector 🧬 Gene therapies aim to reprogram diseased cells by delivering nucleic acids or gene-editing machinery. A central bottleneck is precise delivery to the targeted cell type while evading the immune system. To date, adeno-associated viruses (AAVs)…

@fshcat SBF brain. If you present yourself as some higher level thought god who needs to dumb it down for the rest of us, you’ll be perceived as such. Now, to the rest of us, we know these people exist and have actually have huge strides so we remain unconvinced.

@matthewcobb Wow—how did you find this? Yes, I did meet Francis Crick (and Terry Sejnowski) to discuss a (primitive back-propagation) neural network model of visual processing I built on an old Mac when I was a high school student. It was kind of them to meet with a curious kid. We had tea.

Happy Birthday Ludwig Wittgenstein! (26 April 1889). Often considered one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century. In his lifetime, he published just one slim, highly influential and dense book, the 75-page Tractatus Logicus Philosophicus (1921), one article, one book…
Sometimes I get really scared thinking about this school. And how much lower our quality is from what the outside world imagines. I definitely was seduced by it to come here, which I regret. I'm not sure if I'm just super negative and wrong. It's admit weekend, my grad pics done
this is extremely good. imo it has everything needed to shore up phenomenology (maybe i exaggerate). it doesn’t bill itself as phenomenology but sartre is a key point of reference & it brings back the good bits from kant that phenomenologists like husserl failed to appreciate
