I think it is good for universities to spell out which protest regulations will/won't be enforced by the police, and for student protestors to work this into their cost/benefit math for civil disobedience. That way neither side is surprised. Unclear if this happened at Columbia.

Interesting study looking at how common education polygenic scores modify the effect of rare developmental delay genes. Given that the EA PGS is actually 2/3rds dynastic environment (or stratification), this suggests that environment could be a substantial compensatory force.

I had two postdoc mentors bail from the grant-funded science career. One to Big Pharma due to desire to be closer to helping people with health problems. One to NIH Program, presumably due to being exhausted from the grant chase.
6/ A significant and clinically meaningful OS benefit was observed with adjuvant pembro vs placebo: HR 0.62; 95% CI 0.44-0.87; P = 0.005 At 48 months: 91% of pts receiving pembro were still alive vs 86% with placebo (5% absolute benefit)

💯 to this conclusion (and the rest of the piece). DIY microbiome hackers have an opportunity to demonstrate a more nimble clinical trial process and are instead choosing the path of wellness scams. But there's still time to change course.

I discussed the data behind the recent anti-cavity Lumina treatment. TLDR: while the approach looks promising and self-experimentation is cool, most of the direct data comes from small studies in rats and well... most humans are not rats. writingruxandrabio.com/p/on-lumina-an… What's more, I…

The irritated replies she’s getting bc she’s trying to explain a distinct diff bw hype & reality is an example of how some of these fandoms make people less informed. When the trusted source makes people resist hearing info from elsewhere but also is regularly wrong.
Ok a lot of you think solving protein folding and protein structure prediction are the same thing. They're not. But, even then, AlphaFold has not solved protein structure prediction. It has become a useful tool to be incorporated into the process of protein structure discovery.
Downloaded some survey data once where the code book said missing data was coded a "9". Except it was actually coded as "99".
Teaching a methods class now where students have to analyze survey data for their final, my first thought was that the authors just forgot to recode "9s" as missing Reckless data cleaning is probably much more pervasive and problematic than p-hacking
Inspired by @lpachter and team's exploration of scRNA-seq pipelines, we face similar challenges in scATAC-seq, only magnified! After 5 years of tackling these inconsistencies with my advisor @JunhyongKim , Here is a summary (and some solutions😃) 1/n #Genomics #Bioinformatics
The choice of whether to use Seurat or Scanpy for single-cell RNA-seq analysis typically comes down to a preference of R vs. Python. But do they produce the same results? In biorxiv.org/content/10.110… w/ @Josephmrich et al. we take a close look. The results are 👀 1/🧵
Please see additional discussions from the following tweet by my advisor @JunhyongKim (x.com/JunhyongKim/st…). Lastly, thank you for reading, and happy to discuss anything about scATAC-seq! 15/15
A funny thing happened on the way to routine single nucleus ATAC-seq analysis…and after scratching at it for longer than we wanted, we wrote a paper about what we found. This is a 🧵 about our little paper...(sorry long) biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/
Glad to finally see this (it almost didn't happen even with a 9%ile. Don't ask.)! And it's a big boi, $$$-wise!
big day for parents of sleep-deprived teenaged girls
This is the far right’s trick: they go “where is the moderate middle, why can’t people be reasonable like they used to? because of the culture war no one can have respectful discourse anymore :( ” But then you check their history and it’s just, slurs slurs racism slurs
Call them what they are. Don’t let them play this game
They rely on this code-switching trick, where they can simultaneously be a concerned moderate who has been left behind by changing social norms, and a completely overt bigot

Me engaging about research with my lab or faculty colleagues: “wow this job is amazing, how am I lucky enough to get paid for it?” With grant/department administration: “maybe they’re right and me just finding another job would make both of our lives easier?”
This fall, I got an e-mail from a guy named JM Simpson who'd read things I'd written about homelessness. He mentioned he was a photojournalist in Olympia and that he'd been photographing the unhoused population there. He wanted to share some work with me . . . (1)
