I challenge any government official standing in the way of vital legislation for children in care: spend just one day living their reality. Walk the streets at 1 a.m., terrified to return to a bedsit that doesn’t feel safe. Attend the funeral of a best friend the system failed to protect. Sit face to face with teenagers coerced into gangs and exploited by predators. Then ask yourself — is your political career truly worth more than a child's life? Vote for change, and be that change is government.

Care Champions across the country are changing lives. For young people transitioning out of care, even the smallest gestures—a call to check in, a reassuring chat, a lift to work, a coffee in the canteen, or a moment shared with the team—can mean the world. Because support matters. And inclusivity isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Care leavers miss out on essential items when setting up their first home due to the lack of clear national guidelines on the levels of support offered by councils, latest research shows. cypnow.co.uk/content/news/c…

It is in everyone’s best interests that young people leaving care are given the same opportunities as their peers in both education and employment. Time and time again, we watch the most vulnerable teenagers face homelessness, forced to transition into adult services where support abruptly ends, and they are suddenly deemed independent adults. The harsh reality is that many of these young people have no family or financial support to fall back on—they are left to survive. What they need more than anything is a safe, stable place to call home, where they can rebuild their lives, create a future for themselves, and contribute to society. We have created an economy within an economy, where street-level policies operate under an entirely different set of rules, leaving these young people to navigate a system stacked against them.

@ccwild79 It’s an issue in society that people don’t talk about. Media focuses on issues that grab headlines but don’t talk about care system and ensuring care leavers are supported.

I'm all for more foster carers, but I also want to see financial support for kinship carers announced tomorrow. We can prevent children from suffering years of trauma if we support families first and foremost. Going into care as a child can destroy a life. #changeiscoming

When I was taken into care at 11 years old, I was told that a children's home was my only option. I was physically abused and never given the opportunity to stay with family members. Many years later, my uncle told me he had contacted the local authority to ask if I could stay with him. This request was denied. I hope that tomorrow, when the government announces new reforms for children's social care, they ensure that before any child is taken into care, every avenue is explored. #changeiscoming

During a weekly staff meeting where everyone had to share an interesting fact about themselves, a young man stood up and shared that he was brought up in foster care after losing his mum to cancer when he was just 9 years old. Another team member then stood up and said, 'If anything goes missing, we know who to question first.' The young man was devastated. This is direct discrimination, yet nothing happened to the offending colleague. Now, imagine if the comment had been about race or religion—it would have led to instant dismissal. Being in care should not be a life sentence. By making care experience a protected characteristic, we can challenge the stigma and change the narrative once and for all.
