But, MITS couldn’t make enough of me. Soon people realized that there was a huge market and a lot of people that wanted a computer.
So others like @stevewoz and Steve Jobs, after seeing me, thought they could build a simpler but much less capable, if I might say, computer
Soon after my introduction, the backlog to get one of me grew. At MITS, people worked long hours and used automated machines to keep up.
Most of the commercial purchasers of me doubted my power and usefulness, so bought me to try me out.
The first purchasers of me were hobbyists. However, many companies recognized the utility of me and bought me for controller applications.
The floating point routine was more helpful but increased the size requirement of my memory to just under 8K.
So Paul and Bill, with the help Monty added to BASIC so that could handle those fractional numbers - called a floating point routine.
That is why the story of the first instruction given to me by @PaulGAllen was “PRINT 2+2” and not “2.3+2.5.”
The first version was called 4K BASIC was an integer basic - could only operate on whole numbers. No fractions or numbers with a decimal.
I had a 1K memory board but BASIC needed more. Soon I got a 4K board, so 1st version of BASIC @BillGates and @PaulGAllen wrote would fit.
When @PaulGAllen and @BillGates wrote BASIC for me my designers realized that I had to have more memory to contain that large program.
I came with 256 bytes of memory- a lot in '75. Some integrated circuits only had 16 or 64 bytes of memory - serial memory in a FIFO config.
The Teletype was connected to me using a “current loop,” which was a common way of transferring date in my time.
Everyone wanted a Teletype - so much that Western Electric increased production and considered increasing the factory just because of me!
Teletype tape had holes punched in it that represented the data. The terminal was a fast 10 characters per second.
People soon found out that a Teletype terminal was useful as it provided input and output for me all in one device-on a reel of paper tape
Teletype terminals-called a Teletype - were manufactured by a company called Western Electric, a subsidiary of Bell Telephone.
When you bought me, you had to put me together - you paid money for a computer that you had to assemble, done to save money on assembly.
My CPU ran at 2MHz, in 1975 this was considered fast. Whew!
