When it comes to problems with academic publishing we are in fact the baddies. So many scholars really think pre-pub peer review works as quality control & published stuff is trustworthy. There is no easy fix to the quality problem, but ending publication as target is a beginning

How many AI researchers on here know that Turing's theory of computation is about a particular subset of *human* activities that do *not* require you to think, because you can do them by rote, mindlessly following a set of predefined rules?
This is a strong view, but well reasoned. Possible rebuttals could argue that if reasons/causes or mediators lie in brain chemistry (which some have argued), then things that alter brain chemistry may be helpful because then (and only then) do they address reasons/causes.

Let's say this problem is solved once and for all. What *kind* of problem is it, really? Isn't the CTT's true score a purely statistical, artificial, and meaningless concept?

I started reading @alsnotepad's Desire as Belief by accident while having my tea in Ikea. I don't know what to think about the author's ideas yet, but the book is so sweet (somehow, it seems like the right word) that reading it made me feel as if the weather has changed.

Have you ever had a fight with your significant other and later discovered that you have wildly different recollections of what was said, when, and how? Have you thought about recording a fight in the future? It is shockingly eye-opening. It can also burn a hole in your heart.
Nope. Here are two trivial counterarguments: 1. To have a cause X does not mean to be determined by X (partial causation is a thing) 2. The future can be determined by the present even when the past isn't, for the trivial reason that the transition function may not be injective

Good luck!
We write bad prose to conform to what is expected by the academic cattle, we let random & unmotivated idiots decide what we write, we let greedy publishers get rich by sucking public funds in the process, and we let our careers depend on how good we are in doing this. Smart!
@BRSLWP @Toshi_FRKW Indeed, there are nice tools for this, like @eliasbareinboim's causalfusion.net. It has tools for everything you need, starting by drawing the DAG, finding an identification strategy, estimation…
My experience with reviewers is that the overwhelming majority of them should pursue a different hobby.

This is one of my favorite posts on CrossValidated because it clearly describes what each assumption in linear regression means and what it is necessary and sufficient for. A great antidote to people thinking residuals have to be normally distributed. stats.stackexchange.com/a/16460/116195
Being able to collect large amounts of behavioral data allows us to revisit classic results in cognitive psychology established with simple laboratory stimuli to see whether they hold with more naturalistic stimuli. Shepard's law is just as beautiful for real images.

The frustration non-philosophers may feel when discussing something with a philosopher seems to often originate from the unwillingness to use common words as technical terms.
There is a kind of "vulgar empiricism" circulating in many sciences now, boosted by the apparent power of mindless machine learning techniques. This view does not even acknowledge that science is more than data collection and curve-fitting.
I work in academia. My least favorite part of this job is how people who work there make such a big deal of the fact that they work there as if it wasn't often a silly mess. Hearing how many of them speak at department-level meetings always makes me cringe. Hard.

This post is getting a lot of attention. I usually agree with Brian, but I disagree here in a couple issues. Not accounting for (1) growth in the number of active scientists; (2) ignoring the democratization of the participation and access to science. dynamicecology.wordpress.com/2024/04/29/the…

Yes yes confusion is what thinking feels like
In this sense - have a productive day! Quote from: Richard McElreath (2020): Statistical Rethinking - A Bayesian Course with Examples in R and Stan, p. 212 @rlmcelreath
How many AI researchers on here know that Turing's theory of computation is about a particular subset of *human* activities that do *not* require you to think, because you can do them by rote, mindlessly following a set of predefined rules?

Psychiatric drugs alter brain chemistry, desensitising, suppressing or concealing distressing or disturbing feelings or experiences; they do not treat, cure, or really do much at all to the reasons & causes of those feelings or experiences — certainly not directly. 1/6

@BRSLWP It’s very easy to slip and excuse ourselves but I have to try to do better, even if there is a limit to what I could possibly change.
@aitomczak @BRSLWP There is one caveat: when people know they're being recorded, they will deliberately change the tone of voice/their behavior or choose different words altogether.
Numbers are real; here is, for instance, a four: 4
