As a direct reply to your question, no. I do believe that just as many people voted for Obama so as not to appear racist, I could see something similar happen for a gay presidential candidate (but, not Pete!). But, for me personally, as a straight American man, if a gay candidate came forward who seemed to be the best candidate for the country, his sexual preference wouldn't play into my decision!
