If you host with AWS, I urge you to check your security settings, and set up cost anomaly detection: aws.amazon.com/aws-cost-manag… If you don't? Then I urge you to consider if AWS is right for you, your scale and resources, however tempting their credits may be.

We are all responsible for security, and I take protection of my customers data very seriously. But as a solo founder I'd guess that AWS have more resources than I do to detect and fight hacks and abuses of accounts. And they can certainly afford to pick up the phone.

I don't know how my key leaked. It's a 9yr old account, under utilized + running old projects. AWS do have alerting systems you can use to catch overspend. You should. They didn't exist when I signed up. And with 200 links in their main menu, they're not easy to find.

But: - Is it unreasonable to expect an email when monthly costs escalate by 150,000%? - Or to expect less than 23 hrs response time after an insane credit card bill? - Or to expect the biggest tech company in the world to do more to protect their customers from fraud?

What gets me is the software is well known. This Lambda script is a plain text file, easy for someone like Amazon to search for strings such as 'xmrig', a miner that is frequently used in these hacks, + notify users. Instead I find out via an alert from my credit card company.
