Baseball players should avoid barbell or dumbbell bench presses like the plague because it can worsen existing shoulder imbalances, doesn't translate well to baseball's unilateral movements, and increases risk of injury by locking the scapula and creating poor spinal mechanics. While it can build general strength, the bench press's bilateral nature and stress patterns are not sport-specific, and its stresses can be detrimental to the shoulder girdle, a critical area for overhead athletes. Alternatives like push-ups, medicine ball throws, and landmine presses are better suited for developing sport-specific strength.
