By late 1955, the French government faced a mathematical impossibility. In 1954, the French military had suffered a total, humiliating conventional defeat at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, losing its entire garrison to the Viet Minh and forcing France out of Indochina. That same year, the Algerian War of Independence exploded into a massive guerrilla conflict that would ultimately cost 300,000 French troops and a million Algerian lives. And in Morocco, the Black Crescent and the Army of Liberation were bleeding the colonial administration daily. France did not possess the troops, the money, or the political will to fight three colonial wars on three continents simultaneously. Something had to give. To save their grip on Algeria - where a million French settlers demanded the colony be kept - Paris chose to cut its losses in Morocco and Tunisia. In November 1955, France brought Mohammed V back from exile. In March 1956, the Treaty of Fez was officially torn up, and France granted Morocco formal independence. Dien Bien Phu did not just end French Indochina. It triggered a chain reaction that freed Morocco. A Vietnamese victory in a Southeast Asian valley ended European colonialism in North Africa. Ho Chi Minh's guerrillas - who had studied Abd el-Krim's Rif War tactics - had liberated a country they had never seen.
