My take: Putin gave up nothing by releasing a 74-year-old American held as a pawn for this type of moment. Putin is not a humanitarian, despite how Mr Witkoff addressed him. And whereas President Trump says he gave up nothing for Stephen Hubbard's release, you will hear all the experts correctly say that he did: busting his own sanctions for a diesel deal with Putin that could put $4 billion into his war chest; inviting Putin to the G20; and dumping Putin's victim, Ukraine, face down in the mud, as it tries to defend its sovereignty and its freedom. Trump has given Putin concession after concession -- ending aid to Ukraine, keeping Ukraine out of NATO, celebrating Putin with a red carpet summit, dissing Zelenskyy, wavering sanctions, disrupting intelligence sharing with Ukraine -- and Putin has never changed his position on continuing the war. Not one inch.

It's been a good week for Putin. In recent days, Trump has: * Struck a diesel deal lifting some sanctions * Restricted Starshield for Ukraine * Cut intel warnings of Russian missile launches against Ukraine for several days * Canceled Lindsey Graham sanctions * Demanded Ukraine dump Zelensky * Absolved Russia for helping Iran fight the US * Pushed Europe to resume buying Russian gas

The only other logical explanation for Trump going all in to support Putin right now (apart from the Kompromat/Krasnov theory) is that he needs Russian hacking/information warfare help in the mid terms. Which just underlies how much they helped in the past

Now is the time to stand strong against Russian aggression as we did during the first Trump administration. Putin doesn’t want peace. Putin wants Ukraine. I have no doubt that if Putin overruns Ukraine, it will only be a matter of time until Russia’s military crosses a border that our troops will have to deal with him. America is the Leader of the Free World. For our National Security, for the security of our Allies in Europe including Ukraine, President Trump should rescind this deal immediately and return to the strong policies of our four years in the White House; impose harsh sanctions on any nation purchasing Russian energy and work with our allies to ensure Ukraine has the military support it needs to repel and defeat this Russian invasion once and for all. Trump saves the day for Putin. Just as Ukraine was changing the direction of the war by inflicting real economic pain on Putin by hitting his oil refineries, Trump steps in and agrees to buy Russian diesel. Now Trump can say that Ukraine is bombing American interests and they better stop. Up until today, there was a real chance of an unspoken aerial cease fire if Russian could no longer tolerate the pain, but that has now disappeared

Another way to think about Trump announcement today: If he increased US diesel imports from Canada by 4%, he would gain as much fuel as from this Russia deal. But the Canadians are global super-villains, so who wants to buy from them when you could enrich Putin instead?

The United States is now officially allied with Vladimir Putin and Russia. We will fund Russia’s genocidal war machine in exchange for Putin helping Trump and the Republican Party in the midterms. One of the most shameful and disgusting days in the history of this Republic.

Once again Trump refuses to take responsibility for high gas prices because of his stupid war with Iran. Instead, he's giving a dictator more money to fight a war against a democracy.

Gas prices skyrocketed in the US because of Trump's ill-conceived and unnecessary war against Iran. He is now trying to correct for his mistake by paying a brutal, imperialist Russian dictator billions of dollars. As a result, more Ukrainians will die.
